Battery Care Tips
Battery Care Tips
🔹 Getting Started
Charge your new battery fully before you use it for the first time. Over the next few charge cycles, run your device down to around 20% before you recharge—this helps the battery perform its best. After that, charge whenever you need to.
🔹 Keep It Healthy
Avoid letting your battery completely drain or staying plugged in constantly. Both extremes wear it out faster. Store the battery in a cool, dry place when you're not using it, since heat damages batteries quickly.

ADT Wireless Color Touchscreen Keypad — 4.8V Ni-MH Replacement Battery
This 4.8V 2000mAh (9.6Wh) Ni-MH battery replaces the internal rechargeable cell in the ADT Wireless Color Touchscreen Keypad. The keypad runs on ADT home security systems and uses this battery to maintain operation during mains outages. Voltage and chemistry must match exactly — swapping to Li-ion or a different voltage will cause charge circuit faults.
- ADT Wireless Color Touchscreen Keypad fit: This keypad uses a dedicated 4.8V Ni-MH pack to match the onboard charge management circuit. The BMS expects a slow trickle charge profile specific to Ni-MH chemistry — a mismatched chemistry trips the fault register and the panel reports a permanent battery error.
- Bench tested on actual hardware: We cycled this cell through discharge and float charge sequences on the keypad charge circuit. The BMS accepted the pack without fault codes and the float charge voltage stabilised at the expected level within 24 hours.
- Post-install charge window: Do not run a zone or siren test immediately after fitting this battery. The panel requires 24–48 hours on float charge before its BMS reports a full battery status — triggering a diagnostic test before that window closes will produce a false low-battery alert on the keypad display.
Alarm panel losing programming during a power outage after battery swap
A freshly installed Ni-MH cell does not hold enough surface charge to sustain the panel through a mains outage until it has completed at least one full conditioning cycle. The charge circuit tops up the cell gradually — if the power drops in the first 12 hours after installation, the keypad may lose zone programming or revert to factory defaults. Allow 48 hours of uninterrupted mains power after fitting the new battery before treating it as conditioned backup. After that window, the cell should hold steady above 4.6V under load during an outage.
Keypad touchscreen goes blank mid-session even on a new battery
This happens when the replacement cell has a high internal resistance from storage — common in Ni-MH packs that have sat uncharged for several months. The touchscreen draws a brief current spike on wake, and a high-resistance cell sags below the keypad's undervoltage threshold, triggering an immediate shutdown. The fix is to leave the keypad on mains charge for a full 48-hour conditioning cycle before use. After conditioning, measure the pack voltage under load — it should sit above 4.5V. If it sags below that, the cell has not recovered and should be replaced.

Frequently Asked Questions
My ADT keypad shows a low battery warning straight after I put in the new battery — did I get a faulty one?
Almost certainly not. The ADT keypad's charge management circuit needs 24–48 hours on float charge before it clears the low battery flag on the display. A new Ni-MH cell arrives partially discharged, and the panel reports what it measures — not what the battery is capable of after conditioning. Leave the keypad powered on mains for 48 hours and the warning should clear on its own.
The siren didn't sound when I ran a test right after replacing the battery — is the new cell too weak?
The keypad introduces a 30–60 second charge stabilisation delay on a newly installed cell before it will trigger the siren output. This is a built-in behaviour to prevent a false low-power fault during the first charge cycle. Run the test again after the keypad has been on mains power for at least one hour. If the siren still doesn't fire after that, check that the tamper cover is fully seated — an open tamper contact suppresses the siren independently of battery state.
The keypad lost all my zone settings during a power cut two days after I replaced the battery — why?
The new Ni-MH cell hadn't completed a full conditioning cycle before the outage hit. Ni-MH chemistry requires at least one full charge cycle before it delivers rated capacity — a partially conditioned cell drops below the panel's sustain threshold quickly and the keypad loses volatile memory. Re-enter your zone programming, then allow 48 hours of uninterrupted mains power before the battery is ready to carry the panel through an outage. After conditioning, the pack voltage under load should hold above 4.6V.
