The battery percentage on the SMX-F50 jumps from 60% straight to 10% with no warning — is the cell defective?
The cell is almost certainly fine. The SMX-F50 uses fixed voltage breakpoints to display battery percentage, and a new cell's discharge curve doesn't always align with those breakpoints the way the original OEM cell did. The result is a sudden percentage drop when voltage crosses a threshold the camera interprets as near-empty. Run two full charge-discharge cycles inside the camera body and the indicator mapping will stabilise as the BMS learns the new cell's behaviour.
Why does the SMX-F50 feel warm near the battery compartment during extended video recording with the new cell?
That warmth comes from combined draw — the image sensor, processor, and video encoding all pull current simultaneously during recording, which is the highest sustained load this camcorder puts on the battery. A fresh cell at full charge actually pushes slightly more current than a partially degraded original, which can make the body feel marginally warmer than you were used to. If the camera shuts down due to heat rather than low battery, check that the ventilation slots on the body are not blocked. Ambient temperatures above 35°C will compound this — keep the camcorder shaded during long outdoor recording sessions.
