Fits Sony DCR-HC96, DCR-HC46, DCR-HC26, and DCR-DVD205E; replaces NP-FP70, NP-FP60, NP-FP71 packs.
7.4V, 1360mAh cell delivers full voltage curve needed for autofocus and image stabilisation draw on this MiniDV platform.
Slide connector locks into the battery door slot with a single friction tab; orientation marked on the housing.
We bench-tested this pack on the DCR-HC96 body charger; BMS accepted the cell without fault codes after one full charge cycle.
On first use, run one complete charge cycle through the camera body itself — Sony's firmware needs to register the cell before accurate battery-remaining display shows on the LCD.

Battery Care Tips

🔹 Getting Started

Charge your new battery fully before you use it for the first time. Over the next few charge cycles, run your device down to around 20% before you recharge—this helps the battery perform its best. After that, charge whenever you need to.

🔹 Keep It Healthy

Avoid letting your battery completely drain or staying plugged in constantly. Both extremes wear it out faster. Store the battery in a cool, dry place when you're not using it, since heat damages batteries quickly.

Delivery and Shipping

🔹 Most orders ship the next day, and we use FedEx, UPS, Purolator and other carriers to get them to you. Lithium batteries have to ship by ground only, not air or USPS. Make sure your address is right before you order, because if we have to send it back, you pay for shipping again.

Sony DCR-HC96 / DCR-HC46 Series — 7.4V Li-ion Replacement Battery (NP-FP70)

This is a 7.4V, 1360mAh Li-ion replacement for the Sony NP-FP70 battery. It fits the DCR-HC96, DCR-HC46, DCR-HC26, DCR-DVD205E, and over 38 additional Sony MiniDV Handycam models. The NP-FP70 is also cross-referenced as NP-FP60 and NP-FP71 across Sony's FP-series camcorder lineup.

  • FP-series camcorder compatibility: Sony's mid-2000s MiniDV Handycam lineup shares the same 7.4V cell format, InfoLITHIUM communication rail, and physical latch connector across the HC and DVD sub-series — that's why one battery covers so many models.
  • Bench tested on actual hardware: We ran this cell through charge and discharge cycles on the DCR-HC96 body. The BMS handshake completed on first install, the InfoLITHIUM percentage display populated correctly, and the protection circuit tripped at the expected low-voltage threshold.
  • First-use charge cycle on DCR-HC96: Charge the battery inside the camera body or OEM charger before your first shoot. Sony's InfoLITHIUM system calibrates its remaining-time display against the cell's actual discharge curve during that first full charge — skipping it can cause erratic percentage readings for several cycles.

Why the DCR-HC96 rejects a new NP-FP70 cell on first install

Sony's InfoLITHIUM protocol sends a data handshake between camera and battery to authenticate the cell and calculate remaining capacity. A new third-party cell may not complete this handshake until the camera body has run one charge cycle through it. This is a BMS initialisation step, not a fault with the battery. If the camera shows a blinking battery icon or powers off immediately, place the cell in the OEM charger or camera body and charge to 100% before attempting to shoot.

Battery percentage jumping erratically on the DCR-HC96 display

The DCR-HC96's InfoLITHIUM indicator maps voltage thresholds to percentage steps based on the cell's discharge curve. A replacement cell with a slightly different curve can cause the display to skip segments — showing 80%, then jumping to 40% without warning. This is a calibration issue, not a capacity defect. Run two to three full charge-discharge cycles through the camera body and the indicator will stabilise as the BMS learns the new cell's curve.

Frequently Asked Questions

My DCR-HC96 shows the battery icon blinking and shuts off immediately after I install the new NP-FP70 — is something wrong with the cell?

The DCR-HC96 runs a BMS authentication check on every new cell via Sony's InfoLITHIUM protocol. If the handshake doesn't complete on first install, the camera cuts power rather than run on an unverified source. Place the battery in the OEM charger or camera body and charge it fully to 100% before shooting — one complete charge cycle is usually enough for the BMS to accept the cell and hold a stable connection.

The remaining-time counter on my DCR-HC96 drops from 60% to 10% in minutes with the new battery — what's happening?

Sony's InfoLITHIUM remaining-time display is calculated from the cell's discharge curve, not a simple voltage read. A new replacement cell has a slightly different curve profile than the original, so the counter can jump dramatically until the BMS recalibrates. Run two to three full charge-to-discharge cycles through the camera body without interruption — by the third cycle the counter should track the actual charge state accurately.

The DCR-HC96 drains noticeably faster in cold weather — is this a fault or normal behaviour for this cell?

Li-ion cells lose usable capacity as temperature drops because lithium-ion mobility through the electrolyte slows. At temperatures below 10°C, the NP-FP70's available capacity can fall noticeably below the rated 1360mAh, and the camera's BMS may trip the low-voltage cutoff earlier than expected. This is electrochemistry, not a defective cell. Keep the battery in a warm pocket between takes and let it reach room temperature before loading it into the camera body.
