Why the ContourHD battery indicator jumps erratically after fitting a new cell

The ContourHD estimates remaining charge by reading voltage thresholds across the discharge curve. A new replacement cell has a slightly different discharge curve shape than a worn original — particularly in the mid-range. The camera's fuel gauge maps those voltage points to percentage segments, so a fresh cell can read 80%, drop to 60%, then hold there for an extended period. Running one complete charge-to-full cycle, then discharging to automatic shutoff, lets the camera recalibrate its threshold mapping to the new cell.

ContourHD cuts off recording before the battery indicator reaches empty

The ContourHD draws a sustained load during HD video encoding — sensor, processor, and write buffer all pull simultaneously. If the cell voltage sags below the BMS cutoff threshold under that combined load, the camera shuts down even though the indicator still shows remaining charge. This typically happens when a cell has aged or when a replacement cell is cold. Warm the camera body to ambient temperature before a long recording session, and confirm the cell is charged to at least 4.1V before starting.
