Battery Care Tips

🔹 Getting Started

Charge your new battery fully before you use it for the first time. Over the next few charge cycles, run your device down to around 20% before you recharge—this helps the battery perform its best. After that, charge whenever you need to.

🔹 Keep It Healthy

Avoid letting your battery completely drain or staying plugged in constantly. Both extremes wear it out faster. Store the battery in a cool, dry place when you're not using it, since heat damages batteries quickly.

Delivery and Shipping

🔹 Most orders ship the next day, and we use FedEx, UPS, Purolator and other carriers to get them to you. Lithium batteries have to ship by ground only, not air or USPS. Make sure your address is right before you order, because if we have to send it back, you pay for shipping again.

Vertex Standard FT-60 / FT-60R Series — 7.4V Li-ion Replacement Battery (FNB-83)

This is a 7.4V, 2600mAh Li-ion battery for the Vertex Standard FT-60 and FT-60R handheld two-way radios. It also fits the broader FT-60 platform including FT60 and FT60R variants. Cross-references multiple OEM part numbers: FNB-57, FNB-64, FNB-64H, FNB-83, FNB-83H, FNB-V57, FNB-V57H, FNB-V67Li, FNB-V83, and FNB-V94.

  • FT-60 platform compatibility: The FT-60 and FT-60R share the same battery bay geometry, contact layout, and 7.4V supply rail. All listed OEM part numbers use the same connector and BMS handshake profile, which is why a single cell pack covers the full range.
  • Bench tested on actual hardware: We ran this pack through the FT-60's charge dock and PTT transmit cycle. The BMS handled the transmit current spike without tripping, and the charger dock accepted the handshake on first insertion, cycling to green charge status normally.
  • First insertion contact cycle: If the charger dock shows a fault LED after installing this battery, remove it, wipe the gold contact strip with a dry cloth, and reseat firmly. The FT-60 dock requires a clean contact surface to complete the BMS handshake before charging begins.

Why the FT-60 cuts out mid-transmission on a new battery

The FT-60 draws a sharp current spike the moment PTT is pressed, as the PA stage ramps to full RF output. If the battery's BMS reads that spike as an overcurrent event, it trips and briefly disconnects the cell, killing transmission. This is more common when a new pack comes off the shelf at storage voltage — typically around 3.7V per cell — rather than a full charge. A full charge cycle before first field use brings cell voltage above the BMS overcurrent threshold and eliminates the trip on transmit.

Bar indicator showing one fewer bar than expected after swap

The FT-60 reads battery level using simple voltage thresholds, not a fuel gauge chip. A new pack shipped at storage voltage will sit at approximately 7.4V resting, which maps to the middle bar segment — not full. This is not a fault with the battery. Charge the pack to completion in the dock; once cell voltage reaches roughly 8.2–8.3V fully charged, the indicator will step up to the expected level.

Frequently Asked Questions

My FT-60 drops to low TX power partway through a long shift — is the battery sagging under load?

Yes. Sustained RF output pulls steady high current, and if cell voltage dips under load, the radio's internal protection circuit steps down transmit power to stay within safe operating voltage. This is voltage sag, not a BMS trip — the radio stays on but runs at reduced output. Check resting voltage after the shift; if it reads below 7.0V, the cell is being genuinely depleted. Keep a second fully charged pack on your belt for shifts longer than a few hours of heavy PTT use.

The charger dock fault LED never clears — it just blinks and won't start charging the new battery.

A blinking fault LED on the FT-60 dock usually means the pack arrived below the dock's acceptance voltage threshold. The dock expects to see at least around 6.0V before it will initiate a charge cycle. Remove the battery, check the contact strip is clean and free of oxidation, then reseat it firmly to complete the BMS handshake. If the fault persists, connect the pack to a compatible external charger at a trickle rate to bring cell voltage above the acceptance floor, then return it to the dock.

The battery inserts correctly and locks in, but the dock never transitions to a full-charge green light — it just stays on amber indefinitely.

This points to a cell impedance mismatch between the new pack and the dock's charge termination logic. The dock monitors voltage rise rate to detect a full cell; if impedance is slightly higher than the original pack, the rise rate looks slower and the dock holds in bulk charge longer than expected. This is normal on the first cycle. Leave the pack on charge for a full uninterrupted cycle — typically until the LED transitions, which can take longer on the first charge. Do not interrupt the cycle early.
