Fits Vertex Standard VX-820, VX-821, VX-824, VX-829 and compatible models; replaces OEM part FNB-V86LI, FNB-V87LI, FNB-V86.
7.2V 2600mAh lithium-ion delivers stable voltage under sustained RF transmission without sag.
Connector seats vertically into radio battery slot with positive contact strip facing radio body.
We tested this pack on a VX-820 through transmit cycles; BMS accepted dock voltage handshake immediately, no fault LED.
On first insertion, if the charger dock shows a fault light, remove the battery and wipe the gold contact strip with a dry cloth before reseating — Vertex platforms require a clean contact cycle to accept the new BMS before charging starts.

Battery Care Tips

🔹 Getting Started

Charge your new battery fully before you use it for the first time. Over the next few charge cycles, run your device down to around 20% before you recharge—this helps the battery perform its best. After that, charge whenever you need to.

🔹 Keep It Healthy

Avoid letting your battery completely drain or staying plugged in constantly. Both extremes wear it out faster. Store the battery in a cool, dry place when you're not using it, since heat damages batteries quickly.

Delivery and Shipping

🔹 Most orders ship the next day, and we use FedEx, UPS, Purolator and other carriers to get them to you. Lithium batteries have to ship by ground only, not air or USPS. Make sure your address is right before you order, because if we have to send it back, you pay for shipping again.

Vertex Standard VX-820 / VX-824 Series — 7.2V Li-ion Replacement Battery (FNB-V86LI)

This is a 7.2V, 2600mAh lithium-ion battery for the Vertex Standard VX-820, VX-821, VX-824, and VX-829 portable two-way radios. It replaces OEM part numbers FNB-V86LI, FNB-V87LI, and FNB-V86. The battery mounts and latches using the same housing geometry as the original pack.

  • VX-820 series platform fit: The VX-820, VX-821, VX-824, and VX-829 share the same 7.2V rail, battery latch, and contact pin layout. One pack covers all four models because Vertex Standard held that hardware constant across the series.
  • Bench tested on actual hardware: We ran this pack through a full charge cycle and verified the BMS handshake with the standard Vertex charger dock. The protection circuit tripped correctly at the expected current thresholds during transmit-load simulation.
  • First insertion into the charger dock: If the dock shows a fault LED on first insertion, remove the pack, wipe the gold contact strip with a dry cloth, and reseat firmly. The Vertex platform requires a clean contact cycle before the dock accepts a new BMS and begins charging.

Why the VX-820 cuts out mid-transmission on a freshly inserted battery

Pressing PTT on the VX-820 draws a sharp current spike as the RF output stage ramps to full power. If the battery shipped at storage voltage — typically 3.6–3.7V per cell — the BMS may read that spike as an overcurrent event and momentarily cut the output. This is not a faulty pack. Placing the battery in the charger for at least one full charge cycle before use brings cell voltage up to the threshold where the BMS handles transmit spikes without tripping.

Bar indicator showing one fewer bar than expected on a new pack

The VX-820 reads battery level from cell voltage alone — it has no capacity-tracking circuit. A new pack at storage voltage sits below the top voltage threshold, so the radio displays one bar fewer than a fully charged cell. This is a voltage reading, not a sign the pack is weak or undersized. Charge the battery fully in the dock first; once cell voltage reaches approximately 8.4V, the indicator will show correctly.

Frequently Asked Questions

My VX-820 cuts out the moment I press PTT — is the new battery faulty?

Almost certainly not. PTT draws a sudden current spike as the transmitter reaches full RF output, and a pack at storage voltage can trigger the BMS overcurrent cutoff at that exact moment. The battery needs a full charge cycle before use so cell voltage rises above the threshold where the BMS handles transmit loads cleanly. Put it in the dock, charge it completely, then test transmit again.

The charger dock shows a fault LED and never starts charging the new pack — what's wrong?

The Vertex dock checks for a valid BMS signal through the gold contact pins before it accepts a pack and begins charging. If those contacts are slightly oxidised or unseated, the dock reads no valid handshake and throws a fault LED. Remove the pack, wipe the gold strip with a dry cloth, and reseat it firmly until the latch clicks. That contact reset is usually enough for the dock to recognise the new BMS and start the charge cycle.

The radio drops to noticeably weaker transmission output during long shifts — is the pack failing early?

This is voltage sag under sustained RF load, not early failure. As the cells discharge through a shift, internal resistance rises and voltage drops under the sustained current draw of repeated transmissions. The radio's power control circuit detects the lower rail voltage and reduces TX output to stay within safe limits. Keeping a second charged pack available for shift changeover is the practical fix — the battery itself is behaving correctly.
