Why the CE1200V shuts down at 20–30% remaining after a battery swap

The CE1200V BIOS tracks battery state using stored EEPROM data from the previous cell. When a new pack is installed, that stored data no longer matches the actual charge curve of the fresh cell. Under full CPU plus display load, the laptop hits a voltage cliff — the cell voltage drops sharply before the fuel gauge reaches zero, and the system cuts power to protect itself. Running two full calibration cycles — discharge to hibernate, then charge uninterrupted to 100% — gives the fuel gauge IC enough data points to map the new cell's discharge curve accurately.

This happens because the BIOS reads battery identity and health data from the pack's EEPROM, and the new cell presents different data than the one it expects. The system logs this as an unrecognised or unhealthy battery rather than a hardware fault. Power the laptop off completely, reseat the battery, and boot into the BIOS setup screen to let the controller re-poll the pack. If the warning persists, complete one full discharge-to-hibernate and uninterrupted recharge cycle — the fuel gauge IC will re-initialise against the new cell and the BIOS reading should correct to a valid percentage.

The CE1200V fuel gauge jumps around wildly — showing 80%, then 45%, then 90% within minutes of each other. Is the new battery faulty?

The fuel gauge IC on the CE1200V calibrates itself against charge and discharge data accumulated over multiple cycles. A brand-new cell has no historical data in the fuel gauge register, so the IC is estimating state-of-charge against an empty dataset and the readings are unreliable. This is not a fault with the cell itself. Run two complete cycles — full discharge to hibernate cutoff, then uninterrupted charge to 100% — and the gauge readings will stabilise.

Everex CE1200V system information panel shows the wrong Wh rating after fitting this battery — it reports a different figure than the 31.68Wh on the product page. Why?

The Wh figure displayed in the OS is read from the EEPROM on the battery pack, which stores the manufacturer's rated value at time of production. That rated figure can differ slightly from the actual measured capacity of the cell chemistry, and it also differs from what Windows or Linux calculates based on live voltage and current readings. Neither figure is wrong — they are measuring different things. The cell itself delivers 31.68Wh under standard discharge conditions; the OS-reported number will converge closer to that after two full calibration cycles.

The CE1200V charges to 100% but the battery drains much faster than expected and the laptop goes to hibernate earlier than it should. What is causing this?

This points to the BIOS battery learn cycle still running against stale data from the old cell. The BIOS uses a stored voltage-versus-capacity map to predict remaining charge, and if that map was built on a degraded cell, the new pack appears to drain faster than it actually does. The hibernate threshold fires early because the predicted state-of-charge hits the cutoff point before the cell is genuinely depleted. Discharge the laptop fully to the automatic hibernate point, then charge uninterrupted to 100% twice — after the second cycle the BIOS will have rebuilt its map against the actual capacity of the new cell.
