This is a 7.4V, 1100mAh Li-ion replacement for the JVC BN-V408 battery pack. It fits the GR-DV5000, GR-D200U, GR-D91US, GR-DVF505U, and over 280 additional JVC miniDV camcorder models. The cell is rated at 8.14Wh and matches the original pack's voltage, connector, and form factor exactly.

  • GR-DV5000 and GR-D200U series compatibility: These models share the same BN-V408 footprint and 7.4V nominal rail. The battery connector, latch geometry, and BMS communication protocol are identical across this camcorder family, so one pack covers the full range.
  • Bench tested on actual hardware: We ran this pack through charge and discharge cycles on a GR-DV5000 body. The BMS accepted the cell without error flags, and the camera's battery-remaining indicator tracked through the discharge curve as expected.
  • First charge on JVC miniDV bodies: Charge this pack inside the camera body or JVC OEM charger on the first cycle. Some JVC BMS firmware requires an in-body charge cycle to calibrate the battery-remaining display to the new cell's discharge curve.

Why the GR-DV5000 battery indicator drops suddenly near the end of a charge

JVC's battery gauge on the GR-DV5000 uses a voltage-threshold map calibrated to the original BN-V408 discharge curve. A replacement cell with a slightly different internal resistance will hit the lower voltage threshold faster in the final 20% of capacity, causing the indicator to jump from two bars to zero without warning. This is a gauge mismatch, not a defective pack. Running one full charge and discharge cycle inside the camera body lets the BMS resample the cell's actual curve and tighten up the indicator accuracy.

JVC's BMS runs a brief authentication handshake when a battery is inserted cold. If the cell voltage is below roughly 6.8V — common on packs that have been in storage — the camera body may reject it outright rather than attempt a charge. Remove the pack, place it in a JVC-compatible external charger for 15–20 minutes to bring it above that threshold, then reinsert it into the camera. The body should recognise it and resume normal charging from there.

My GR-DV5000 shows a battery error as soon as I insert this replacement — is the pack faulty?

Not necessarily. JVC miniDV bodies run a voltage check on insertion, and a pack below roughly 6.8V will trigger an error rather than begin charging. Charge the pack in a standalone JVC-compatible charger for 15–20 minutes first, then reinsert it into the camera body. That brings the cell above the acceptance threshold and clears the error.

The battery percentage on my JVC camcorder jumps around — it reads 60%, then suddenly drops to 10% while recording. What's happening?

The GR-DV5000's fuel gauge maps voltage thresholds to percentage bars using a curve tuned to the original BN-V408 cell. A replacement cell with different internal resistance hits those thresholds at slightly different points, so the displayed percentage can skip steps — especially under the higher current draw of active recording versus standby. Run one complete charge-to-discharge cycle inside the camera body and the BMS will resample the new cell's curve. After that cycle, the indicator typically tracks within one bar of actual remaining capacity.

This pack seems to drain faster when I'm shooting in cold weather compared to indoor use — is that normal for this camcorder?

Yes, and it's the cell chemistry, not the pack. Li-ion internal resistance rises sharply below about 10°C, which increases voltage sag under load. The GR-DV5000's BMS reads that sag as low charge and can cut the cell off earlier than it would at room temperature. Keep the camera body close to your body between shots to maintain cell temperature, and expect reduced capacity in cold conditions — this applies to the original BN-V408 pack as well as any Li-ion replacement.
