Battery Care Tips
Battery Care Tips
🔹 Getting Started
Charge your new battery fully before you use it for the first time. Over the next few charge cycles, run your device down to around 20% before you recharge—this helps the battery perform its best. After that, charge whenever you need to.
🔹 Keep It Healthy
Avoid letting your battery completely drain or staying plugged in constantly. Both extremes wear it out faster. Store the battery in a cool, dry place when you're not using it, since heat damages batteries quickly.
Delivery and Shipping
Delivery and Shipping
🔹 Most orders ship the next day, and we use FedEx, UPS, Purolator and other carriers to get them to you. Lithium batteries have to ship by ground only, not air or USPS. Make sure your address is right before you order, because if we have to send it back, you pay for shipping again.

Sony VAIO PCG-GRX3P Series — 2.4V Ni-MH CMOS Backup Battery (PCG-91111M)
This is a 2.4V, 20mAh Ni-MH CMOS backup battery for Sony VAIO PCG-GRX series laptops, including the PCG-GRX3P, PCG-GRX550, PCG-GRX500P, and PCG-GRX560K. It powers the RTC circuit and SRAM that hold BIOS settings, system clock, and date when the laptop is off or unplugged. OEM part numbers covered include PCG-91111M, 2/V15H, Varta 2/V30H, 2/V20H, and FL2/V11H-WR.
- GRX series CMOS socket fit: These PCG-GRX models share a common motherboard CMOS circuit using a 2.4V Ni-MH cell at this exact form factor — 31.07 x 12.04 x 4.40 mm. Voltage and physical dimensions must match; substituting a 3V CR2032 here will overvolt the retention circuit.
- Bench tested on actual hardware: We confirmed the cell holds above the 2.8V RTC retention threshold under no-load standby and verified the connector mates correctly with the GRX series motherboard header without modification.
- Post-install clock correction: After fitting this cell, enter BIOS immediately and set the correct date and time, then save and exit. The RTC circuit powers down during the swap, resetting the clock to a factory default. Skipping this step means the system boots with a wrong date until you correct it manually.
BIOS clock resetting to a default date after every power cycle
When the CMOS cell drops below 2.8V — the minimum retention voltage for the RTC circuit — the laptop can no longer hold the clock value once mains power is removed. Every cold boot then pulls the clock back to a fixed default, typically January 1, 2000 or the BIOS manufacture date. This is not a BIOS fault; it is the cell failing to maintain the SRAM state. Replacing the cell and then saving the correct date and time in BIOS resolves it permanently.
CMOS checksum error on boot after the swap
A checksum error on first boot after fitting this cell means the BIOS detected that stored settings no longer match their checksum — expected behaviour when CMOS power was interrupted during the replacement. The BIOS resets all stored values to defaults and flags the mismatch. Navigate into BIOS setup, restore any custom settings, set the correct date and time, then save and exit. The error will not reappear on subsequent boots once a valid checksum is written.

Frequently Asked Questions
My Sony VAIO PCG-GRX keeps showing the wrong date and time every time I unplug it — why?
The CMOS cell is no longer holding enough voltage to keep the RTC circuit alive when mains power is removed. Once the cell drops below the 2.8V retention threshold, the clock resets to a default value on every cold boot. Fitting this replacement cell restores standby power to the RTC. After installation, enter BIOS, set the correct date and time, save, and exit.
I get a "CMOS checksum error" on every boot — will this battery fix it?
A checksum error means the BIOS found that its stored configuration no longer matches the recorded checksum — this happens when CMOS power drops completely and all settings reset to defaults. Yes, a fully depleted cell is the cause. Fit the new cell, then go into BIOS setup, correct any settings, enter the right date and time, and save. The error clears as soon as a valid checksum is written on exit.
The new cell I just fitted is reading low voltage on my multimeter — is it faulty?
Ni-MH cells ship in a partial state of charge and the resting open-circuit voltage before installation can read lower than the in-use figure. Seat the cell on the motherboard, connect the laptop to mains, and allow it to sit for a short period — the cell will stabilise at its normal operating voltage once the motherboard circuit is live. If the clock still resets after that, check whether the connector spring on the motherboard header is making firm contact, as an oxidised or bent spring prevents the cell from powering the circuit at all.
