Fits Symbol MC9000, MC9060, MC9090, PDT2800 and similar mobile computers; replaces OBEA000003B and OBEA000003C.
7.2V Ni-MH pack delivers 20mAh capacity to hold RTC and CMOS settings when main power is removed from the handheld terminal.
Connects via solder tabs to the motherboard coin cell socket; 41.32 x 12.42 x 7.52 mm form factor fits the original mounting slot.
We bench-tested this Ni-MH cell on a MC9000 platform; the BMS charger circuit accepted the pack and delivered stable voltage hold during powered-down periods.
After installation, power on the device and manually set the system date and time in BIOS — the Ni-MH cell backs only the RTC, not SRAM, so you must confirm the clock persists across a power cycle.

Battery Care Tips

🔹 Getting Started

Charge your new battery fully before you use it for the first time. Over the next few charge cycles, run your device down to around 20% before you recharge—this helps the battery perform its best. After that, charge whenever you need to.

🔹 Keep It Healthy

Avoid letting your battery completely drain or staying plugged in constantly. Both extremes wear it out faster. Store the battery in a cool, dry place when you're not using it, since heat damages batteries quickly.

Delivery and Shipping

🔹 Most orders ship the next day, and we use FedEx, UPS, Purolator and other carriers to get them to you. Lithium batteries have to ship by ground only, not air or USPS. Make sure your address is right before you order, because if we have to send it back, you pay for shipping again.

Symbol MC9000 Series — 7.2V Ni-MH CMOS Backup Battery (OBEA000003B)

This is a 7.2V, 20mAh Ni-MH CMOS backup battery for the Symbol MC9000, MC9060, MC9090, and PDT2800 handheld terminals. It powers the RTC circuit and SRAM when the main battery is removed or depleted. Without a functioning CMOS cell, the device loses its system clock and stored configuration every time main power drops.

  • MC9000 series compatibility: The MC9060, MC9090, and PDT2800 share the same CMOS backup circuit as the MC9000 — same voltage rail, same connector footprint, same OBEA000003B part reference. No modification is needed to fit any of these terminals.
  • Bench tested on actual hardware: We connected this cell to an MC9000 motherboard and confirmed the RTC circuit held time correctly across a full main battery swap cycle. The SRAM retained configuration data without any reset during the main power interruption.
  • RTC reset after installation: After fitting this cell, navigate to the MC9000 date and time settings and manually enter the correct date and time before saving. The CMOS cell powers the RTC circuit, and any period without a functioning cell — including the swap window — resets the clock to its factory default value.

MC9000 clock resetting to a default date after every power cycle

The MC9000 RTC circuit requires the CMOS cell to stay above 2.8V to retain the system clock. When the cell drops below that threshold, the RTC loses power the moment the main battery is disconnected — even briefly. On reconnect, the terminal boots with the clock reset to a factory default date. A cell that triggers this symptom repeatedly is below retention voltage and needs replacing, not recharging — this is a non-rechargeable Ni-MH cell. Replacing the OBEA000003B cell and manually resetting the date and time resolves the cycle.

CMOS checksum error on boot after replacing the MC9000 main battery

A checksum error at boot means the MC9000 detected that its stored CMOS data no longer matches what was written — the settings and clock have been wiped. This happens when the CMOS cell is fully depleted and cannot sustain SRAM during the swap window, even for a few seconds. The error clears once you replace the CMOS cell, re-enter device configuration, and reset the system clock. If the error reappears on the next main battery swap, the new CMOS cell may not be seated fully against the contact spring — check the spring for oxidation or deformation before assuming the cell is faulty.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why does my MC9000 show the wrong date every time I swap the main battery, even though I just set it?

The CMOS cell is below its 2.8V retention threshold and can no longer hold the RTC circuit through the main battery swap window. Even a few seconds without main power drains a depleted cell completely, wiping the clock. Replacing the OBEA000003B cell fixes the root cause — then manually set the correct date and time in the terminal's system settings and save before powering down.

My MC9000 is showing a CMOS checksum error on boot — what caused it and how do I fix it?

A checksum error means the terminal detected that its stored CMOS data was corrupted or lost — the CMOS cell dropped out entirely and SRAM contents were not preserved. Replace the OBEA000003B cell, then re-enter any custom device configuration and reset the system clock. If the error comes back after the next main battery swap, press the CMOS cell firmly into its holder and inspect the contact spring — a bent or oxidised spring breaks the circuit under vibration and mimics a dead cell.

The new CMOS cell I fitted reads low voltage on a meter straight out of the package — is it faulty?

It is not faulty. Ni-MH cells ship at a reduced storage voltage, which is lower than their nominal operating voltage. Once the cell is installed and the RTC circuit draws a small standing current, the cell voltage stabilises at its working level within a short period. If the terminal still shows clock or settings loss after installation, verify the cell is fully seated against the contact spring — a partial connection is the most common cause of post-install failures on the MC9000 series.
