Battery Care Tips

🔹 Getting Started

Charge your new battery fully before you use it for the first time. Over the next few charge cycles, run your device down to around 20% before you recharge—this helps the battery perform its best. After that, charge whenever you need to.

🔹 Keep It Healthy

Avoid letting your battery completely drain or staying plugged in constantly. Both extremes wear it out faster. Store the battery in a cool, dry place when you're not using it, since heat damages batteries quickly.

Delivery and Shipping

🔹 Most orders ship the next day, and we use FedEx, UPS, Purolator and other carriers to get them to you. Lithium batteries have to ship by ground only, not air or USPS. Make sure your address is right before you order, because if we have to send it back, you pay for shipping again.

AT&T 509 — 2.4V Ni-MH Replacement Battery

This is a 2.4V, 1200mAh Ni-MH replacement battery for the AT&T 509 cordless phone handset. It slots into the handset's battery compartment and restores power to the phone's transmit and standby circuits. When the original pack stops holding a charge, this brings the handset back to working condition.

  • AT&T 509 handset fit: The 509 uses a 2.4V two-cell Ni-MH configuration. This battery matches that voltage rail and the physical cell arrangement the handset expects. Swapping chemistry or voltage on a cordless phone trips the base station's charge control circuit.
  • Bench tested on actual hardware: We cycled this pack through charge and discharge on the 509 platform. The BMS accepted charge from the base cradle without fault, and the handset powered on cleanly through each cycle.
  • First-charge protocol for Ni-MH cordless batteries: After installing, seat the handset in the base and leave it for a full 16 hours before the first use. Ni-MH cells shipped in partial-discharge state need a slow first charge to reach rated capacity — a short first charge leaves usable capacity on the table for the first several cycles.

Range reduced after swapping the battery on the AT&T 509

DECT transmitters draw a short burst of current every time the handset communicates with the base. A Ni-MH cell that hasn't completed its conditioning cycles shows a steeper voltage sag under that RF load. When cell voltage dips below the handset's transmit threshold, the radio cuts output power to compensate. The fix is to complete three to five full charge-and-discharge cycles — range typically stabilises once the cells are properly conditioned.

Base station shows no charge light after installing the new battery

Ni-MH packs lose voltage during shipping and storage. If the pack arrives below roughly 2.0V, the base station's charge controller may not recognise it as a valid battery and will withhold charge current. Remove the handset, wait 30 seconds, and re-seat it firmly — some base stations retry detection on reconnect. If the charge light still doesn't activate, a brief manual charge using a standalone Ni-MH charger at low current (around 60mA) will bring the pack up to a voltage the base will accept.

Frequently Asked Questions

My AT&T 509 talk time is still short after replacing the battery — is something wrong with the new pack?

Nothing is wrong. Ni-MH cells ship partially discharged and need three to five full charge-and-discharge cycles before they deliver rated capacity. Each cycle conditions the cells and reduces internal resistance. Run the handset until it signals low battery, return it to the base for a full charge, and repeat — talk time increases noticeably after the third cycle.

The handset lost its pairing with the base after I swapped the battery — how do I fix that?

Some DECT phones drop their pairing data when power is fully removed from the handset. This is a firmware behaviour, not a battery fault. Re-register the handset through the base station's pairing or registration menu — on most AT&T 509 units, press and hold the page/find button on the base for five seconds, then follow the handset prompts to re-pair.

The battery drains completely overnight even when the handset is sitting in the base — what's causing that?

This usually means the handset isn't making solid contact with the base charging pins. Check that the handset is fully seated and the charge light is active — if it rocks or sits at an angle, the pins aren't engaging. Clean the contact pins on both the handset and base with a dry cloth, then re-seat the handset. If the charge light confirms a solid connection but the pack still drains overnight, the base station's charge circuit may need inspection.
