Battery Care Tips
Battery Care Tips
🔹 Getting Started
Charge your new battery fully before you use it for the first time. Over the next few charge cycles, run your device down to around 20% before you recharge—this helps the battery perform its best. After that, charge whenever you need to.
🔹 Keep It Healthy
Avoid letting your battery completely drain or staying plugged in constantly. Both extremes wear it out faster. Store the battery in a cool, dry place when you're not using it, since heat damages batteries quickly.

Garmin Astro 220 / DC20 Series — 3.7V Li-ion Replacement Battery (010-10806-00)
This 3.7V, 2600mAh Li-ion battery replaces the original pack in the Garmin Astro 220, Astro 320, and Astro System DC20 and DC30 GPS dog tracking collars. It matches OEM part numbers 010-10806-00, 010-10806-01, 010-10806-20, 361-00029-00, and AC00-12542. Capacity is rated at 9.62Wh.
- Astro 220, 320, DC20, DC30 fitment: These collars share the same battery bay dimensions, connector pinout, and BMS handshake protocol. The 66.00 x 18.35mm cell footprint fits the housing without modification, and the BMS communicates state-of-charge data correctly to the Astro handheld unit.
- Bench tested on actual hardware: We ran this cell through full charge and discharge cycles on the DC20 collar platform. The BMS accepted the pack without fault codes, reported accurate charge percentage to the paired Astro 220 handset, and held stable voltage under continuous GPS transmission load.
- First GPS acquisition after install: After fitting a new battery, the collar performs a cold start — GPS almanac data is lost when power is fully interrupted. Take the dog outside and allow 5–10 minutes in open sky for the first fix. Subsequent warm starts will be significantly faster.
Battery drain spike when tracking in remote or rural terrain
In low-signal areas, the collar's GPS receiver and cellular radio both increase transmit power to maintain a fix and push location updates to the Astro handset. This dual-radio load draws more current than tracking in open suburban environments. Collar battery life in dense forest or canyon terrain can drop noticeably compared to flat open ground. If the collar is used regularly in these conditions, check the battery voltage at the collar contacts — a healthy fully charged cell reads 4.1–4.2V at rest.
Collar drops off the Astro map and won't re-register after a power cycle
After a full power interruption — such as a battery swap — the DC20 and DC30 collars sometimes lose their active pairing with the Astro handset and stop reporting position. This is not a battery fault; it is a re-registration handshake the collar must complete after cold boot. Power the collar on fully, then navigate to the Astro handheld's dog list and select "Update Dog Info" to force the collar to re-broadcast its ID. The collar's status LED should change from a slow blink to a steady pulse once the handset confirms the link.

Frequently Asked Questions
My Garmin DC20 collar got a GPS fix fine before — now after swapping the battery it just shows "Searching" on the Astro handset. What's happening?
A full battery swap cuts power completely, which clears the GPS almanac the collar stores to speed up location fixes. The collar is now doing a cold start from scratch, which takes 5–10 minutes of clear sky to complete — longer if the dog is under tree cover or near buildings. Walk the dog into open ground and leave the collar powered on. Once the first fix locks, warm starts after that will come through in under a minute.
The collar battery drains much faster when we're hunting in thick bush compared to open fields — is this a fault with the replacement cell?
It is not a cell fault. In dense terrain, the collar's GPS chipset works harder to maintain satellite lock, and the radio transmitter increases output power to push updates back to the Astro handheld through vegetation and elevation. That combined load pulls significantly more current than tracking in open ground with a clear sky view. To confirm the cell is healthy, check collar contact voltage after a full charge — a good cell reads 4.1–4.2V at rest before the collar powers on.
After I replaced the battery, the Astro 220 handset shows the collar in the dog list but the location never updates — it's frozen on the last known position.
This is a pairing re-registration issue, not a GPS fault. After a cold boot from a battery swap, the DC20 collar sometimes stops actively transmitting its position ID to the handset even though it appears listed. On the Astro 220, go into the dog list, select the collar, and choose "Update Dog Info" — this forces the handset to re-poll the collar and re-establish the live data link. The collar LED will shift from a slow blink to a steady pulse once the handset confirms the active connection.
