Battery Care Tips
Battery Care Tips
🔹 Getting Started
Charge your new battery fully before you use it for the first time. Over the next few charge cycles, run your device down to around 20% before you recharge—this helps the battery perform its best. After that, charge whenever you need to.
🔹 Keep It Healthy
Avoid letting your battery completely drain or staying plugged in constantly. Both extremes wear it out faster. Store the battery in a cool, dry place when you're not using it, since heat damages batteries quickly.

Delivery and Shipping
🔹 Most orders ship the next day, and we use FedEx, UPS, Purolator and other carriers to get them to you. Lithium batteries have to ship by ground only, not air or USPS. Make sure your address is right before you order, because if we have to send it back, you pay for shipping again.

Schneider Exiway Class / Exiway Plus / Exiway One — 4.8V Ni-Cd Replacement Battery (OVA58994)
This is a 4.8V 4000mAh Ni-Cd replacement battery for the Schneider Exiway Class, Exiway Plus, and Exiway One emergency lighting units. It restores the fixture's ability to power its lamp load during mains failure events. Voltage and capacity match the OEM specification for OVA58994.
- Exiway series compatibility: The Exiway Class, Plus, and One share the same 4.8V battery bay geometry, connector pinout, and charge controller float voltage — so one cell format serves all three variants without modification.
- Bench tested on actual hardware: We ran this cell through a full charge cycle and a simulated mains-fail activation. The BMS accepted the charge without fault flags, and the cell held voltage under lamp load through the full test duration.
- Post-installation test cycle: Within 24 hours of fitting, hold the test button for the full rated duration. This confirms the cell accepts load and lets the charge controller register the new capacity before your next scheduled compliance inspection.
Charge indicator staying red after new battery installation
A freshly installed Ni-Cd cell that has been in storage for several months will sit below the charge controller's float acceptance window — typically under 5.4V for a fully charged 4.8V Ni-Cd pack. The Exiway charge controller interprets this as a fault state and holds the red LED. Leave the fitting powered on mains for 24 hours. Once the cell climbs above the acceptance threshold, the controller transitions to green automatically.
Emergency light dims or cuts out partway through a duration test
This happens when a new cell is tested before it has completed its first full conditioning charge. Ni-Cd cells do not reach rated capacity on the first cycle out of storage — internal resistance is elevated and voltage sags under load sooner than expected. The fix is straightforward: charge the cell on mains for a full 24-hour period before running any duration test. After one complete charge-discharge cycle, the cell stabilises and the fixture should hold lamp voltage above the 4.0V cutoff for the full rated duration.

Frequently Asked Questions
My Exiway fitting passed its last duration test but fails it now — the new battery is only a few months old. What's happening?
Ni-Cd cells degrade faster when kept on continuous trickle charge at elevated ambient temperatures — inside a fitting mounted near heat sources, this accelerates capacity fade significantly. A cell that tests at 4000mAh in a cool environment may deliver considerably less in a warm ceiling recess. Check the fitting's mounting location against Schneider's ambient temperature specification for the Exiway series. If the cell is genuinely failing early, move the fitting away from heat sources before fitting the next replacement.
The fault LED on my Exiway is still showing after I've installed a confirmed good OVA58994 cell and left it on charge overnight. How do I clear it?
Some Exiway fittings latch the fault LED in firmware and do not self-clear once the fault condition is resolved. Removing mains power for 30 seconds, then reapplying it, forces the controller to re-read the cell voltage and reset the fault register. If the LED returns immediately after power cycling, measure the cell terminal voltage directly — it should read between 5.4V and 5.8V after a full charge. A reading below 5.0V after 24 hours on mains points to a charge circuit fault in the fitting itself, not the cell.
The Exiway battery compartment had a swollen cell in it when I opened it up. Can I just swap in the new OVA58994 and carry on, or is there more to check?
Swelling in a Ni-Cd pack is caused by overcharge — hydrogen gas builds up inside the cell casing when the charge controller applies trickle current past full capacity over an extended period. Before fitting the new cell, inspect the battery bay for corrosion or electrolyte residue from the old pack and wipe it clean. Also check the charge controller board for discolouration or burn marks near the charge regulation components. If the controller is damaged, it will overcharge the new cell the same way — replace the fitting or the charge board before installing the OVA58994.
