Ni-MH cells that drop below roughly 1.0V per cell during long-term storage can confuse a delta-V charger into reading a fault — the charger expects a specific voltage rise on connect, and a deeply discharged pack does not give it. Some chargers will reject the pack entirely. A short "recovery" charge at a low trickle rate, if your charger supports it, can bring cells back above the acceptance threshold. If the charger has no recovery mode, try warming the pack to room temperature first — cell impedance drops and the initial voltage reading climbs enough for the charger to begin a normal cycle.
Mower cuts out mid-row then recovers after a few minutes
This is thermal protection activating, not a faulty battery. When the blade motor draws sustained high current — wet grass, thick patches, or a slightly raised deck — cell temperature rises and the BMS disconnects the pack to prevent damage. The mower stops, the pack cools, and the BMS resets. The fix is a five-minute cooldown before resuming, and if it recurs on every row, check that the blade is sharp — a dull blade pulls significantly more current than a clean-cutting one.

The new battery feels noticeably warmer than my old one during the first few charges — is something wrong?
Nothing is wrong. Fresh Ni-MH cells run warmer during the first four to five charge-discharge cycles as the cell chemistry stabilises. We measured elevated surface temperature on new packs during bench conditioning, and it normalises by cycle five. Keep the pack out of direct sunlight while charging and allow airflow around the mower's battery compartment — after the break-in cycles, heat output drops to normal operating levels.
The Solarmower barely moves on cold mornings even with a full charge — is the battery failing?
Cold reduces available capacity in Ni-MH cells — at 5°C you can lose 20–30% of rated capacity compared to performance at 20°C. The pack is not failing; internal resistance rises in the cold and the motor can't pull its full starting current. Bring the battery indoors the night before a cold-morning mow and fit it just before you run the mower. Cell temperature at 15°C or above will restore normal blade motor response.
