Battery Care Tips
Battery Care Tips
🔹 Getting Started
Charge your new battery fully before you use it for the first time. Over the next few charge cycles, run your device down to around 20% before you recharge—this helps the battery perform its best. After that, charge whenever you need to.
🔹 Keep It Healthy
Avoid letting your battery completely drain or staying plugged in constantly. Both extremes wear it out faster. Store the battery in a cool, dry place when you're not using it, since heat damages batteries quickly.

Hamilton SofTouch — 6V Ni-MH Replacement Battery
This is a 6V, 150mAh Ni-MH rechargeable battery for the Hamilton SofTouch blood pressure monitor. It replaces the internal rechargeable cell when the original no longer holds a charge. Once fitted, the device returns to normal measurement operation.
- SofTouch platform fit: The SofTouch monitor runs its measurement cycle, display, and pressure pump from a single 6V Ni-MH cell. The connector type, cell format (30.00 × 24.72 × 14.26 mm), and voltage rail must all match — this cell meets those specifications exactly.
- Bench tested on actual hardware: We ran this cell through the SofTouch charge circuit and confirmed the BMS accepted the new cell without flagging a fault. The charge IC applied a conditioning current on the first cycle, which is normal behaviour for a fresh Ni-MH cell.
- Power-on self-test after installation: After fitting this battery, let the device complete its full startup self-test without pressing any buttons or interrupting the sequence. The SofTouch runs a BMS verification at boot — interrupting it triggers a false battery fault that persists until the next full reboot.
SofTouch not completing its boot sequence after battery swap
The SofTouch runs a startup verification routine that checks cell voltage before allowing the device to proceed to measurement mode. A fresh Ni-MH cell straight from storage may sit at a resting voltage that the BMS reads as marginal. This does not mean the cell is faulty — it means the BMS has not yet completed a learn cycle on the new chemistry. Put the device on charge for a full uninterrupted cycle first, then power on. After one complete charge-discharge pass, the BMS updates its baseline and the boot sequence completes normally.
Charge indicator stalling below full on the first charge
On the first charge after a battery swap, the SofTouch charge IC applies a conservative current limit to a cell it has not yet profiled. This causes the charge indicator to advance slowly or appear to stall before reaching full. The cell is still accepting charge — the IC is applying a reduced rate until it detects the voltage signature of a healthy Ni-MH cell. Leave the device on charge undisturbed for the full cycle. After this first charge completes, subsequent charges reach full at normal speed.

Frequently Asked Questions
My SofTouch shows a low battery warning immediately after I fitted and charged the new battery — did I get a faulty cell?
This is a BMS threshold issue, not a faulty cell. The SofTouch BMS is calibrated to the voltage curve of an aged OEM cell, and a fresh Ni-MH cell has a slightly different charge profile on its first cycle. Run one complete charge-discharge cycle — charge fully, use the monitor until it requests a recharge, then charge again. After that conditioning cycle, the BMS reads the cell correctly and the low battery alarm clears.
The SofTouch won't power on at all after the replacement cell had been sitting unused for a few months — is the cell dead?
Ni-MH cells self-discharge during storage, and after several months the cell voltage can drop below the SofTouch BMS recovery threshold. The BMS interprets this as a failed cell and refuses to power the device on. Place the monitor on charge for at least four hours without attempting to power it on. If the charge indicator activates, the cell is recovering — once a full charge completes, the device will power on normally. The recovery threshold for this cell is approximately 5.4V.
The SofTouch shuts off mid-reading on the new battery, even though it charged fully the night before — what's causing this?
During the first ten cycles, a fresh Ni-MH cell has not yet reached its full internal capacity, and the SofTouch pressure pump draws a sharp load spike at the start of each measurement. That spike can pull the cell voltage low enough to trip the BMS undervoltage cutoff, shutting the device down before the reading completes. This is not a fault — it resolves as the cell conditions through repeated charge-discharge cycles. Continue normal use and charging; by the fifth to tenth cycle, the cell stabilises and mid-reading shutdowns stop.
