Device will not power on after the battery sat in storage

Li-ion cells self-discharge during storage. If the pack voltage drops below the BMS recovery threshold — typically around 9V for a 10.8V three-cell pack — the protection circuit latches off and blocks startup entirely. Place the battery on charge for a minimum of 30 minutes before attempting to power the device on. If the charger shows no activity after 30 minutes, measure pack voltage at the connector; anything below 8.5V requires a slow pre-charge to recover the BMS latch.

The device is alarming low battery immediately after I put in a fully charged replacement — is the battery faulty?

It is not faulty. The device BMS sets its low-battery alarm threshold against a capacity baseline built from previous charge cycles, and a new cell has not completed that learn cycle yet. Run one full charge-discharge cycle on the replacement before putting it into clinical rotation. After that first cycle, the alarm threshold calibrates to the new cell and the false low-battery alert stops.

The device shuts off unexpectedly during use — it does not alarm first, it just cuts out

New Li-ion cells have higher internal resistance in the first 10 cycles, which causes a sharper voltage sag under the sustained load a medical monitoring device draws. The BMS reads that sag as an under-voltage event and trips the protection circuit before a low-battery alarm has time to fire. This resolves as the cells condition through the first 10 charge-discharge cycles. Until then, keep a second charged battery available for critical-use sessions.

The charge indicator has been sitting at 99% for over an hour and will not reach 100% — is something wrong with the charger or the battery?

Nothing is wrong. The charge IC applies a reduced top-off current on a new cell pack to avoid over-stressing unconditioned cells, which extends the final absorption phase significantly on the first charge. This is normal behaviour and does not affect delivered capacity. Leave the device on charge until the indicator advances — on most units it completes within two hours. From the second charge cycle onward, the top-off phase shortens to normal.
