Battery Care Tips

🔹 Getting Started

Charge your new battery fully before you use it for the first time. Over the next few charge cycles, run your device down to around 20% before you recharge—this helps the battery perform its best. After that, charge whenever you need to.

🔹 Keep It Healthy

Avoid letting your battery completely drain or staying plugged in constantly. Both extremes wear it out faster. Store the battery in a cool, dry place when you're not using it, since heat damages batteries quickly.

Delivery and Shipping

🔹 Most orders ship the next day, and we use FedEx, UPS, Purolator and other carriers to get them to you. Lithium batteries have to ship by ground only, not air or USPS. Make sure your address is right before you order, because if we have to send it back, you pay for shipping again.

Hitachi Vision plus 5000 — 10.8V Ni-MH Replacement Battery (BTP-031)

This is a 10.8V, 4000mAh (43.2Wh) Ni-MH battery pack for the Hitachi Vision plus 5000 notebook. It replaces the original BTP-031 cell when the existing pack has lost charging capacity. Connector and form factor match the original unit.

  • Vision plus 5000 fitment: The BTP-031 uses a fixed 10.8V rail with a proprietary connector and cell arrangement specific to this chassis. Swapping a different voltage pack or pin-incompatible unit trips the protection circuit and the system will not boot on battery.
  • Bench tested on actual hardware: We cycled this pack through charge and discharge on a Vision plus 5000 chassis. The BMS held voltage within spec under CPU and display load, and the charge controller accepted full capacity without flagging an error state.
  • First-cycle calibration on the Vision plus 5000: After fitting this cell, run one full discharge to hibernate-cutoff, then charge uninterrupted to 100%. This resets the BIOS battery learn cycle and clears the inaccurate health warning that appears after every cell swap on this platform.

BIOS reporting poor battery health after fitting the BTP-031

The Vision plus 5000 BIOS reads health data stored in the old cell's EEPROM during its last known state. When a new cell goes in, that EEPROM data is absent or mismatched, so the BIOS immediately flags the pack as degraded. This is not a fault with the replacement cell. Running one full discharge-to-hibernate followed by an uninterrupted full charge forces the BIOS learn cycle to rewrite its reference data against the new cell. After one or two cycles the health indicator updates to reflect actual capacity.

Laptop shutting down while the gauge still shows 20–30% remaining

Ni-MH cells have a steeper voltage drop-off curve under combined CPU and backlight load than the fuel gauge IC expects at that state of charge. When the pack voltage falls below the BMS cutoff threshold — typically around 9.0V under load on a 10.8V Ni-MH pack — the system shuts down instantly regardless of the percentage shown on screen. The fuel gauge IC needs two to three full calibration cycles before its discharge curve model matches the actual cell behaviour. Discharge fully to hibernate-cutoff, then charge to 100% without interruption for each of those cycles.

Frequently Asked Questions

The Vision plus 5000 shows 0% and "unknown battery" immediately after I put the new BTP-031 in — is the cell dead?

It is not dead. The BIOS on the Vision plus 5000 reads state-of-charge data from the old cell's EEPROM, and the new cell comes in with no matching history, so the system reports 0% or unknown. Run the laptop on AC power until it fully charges, then discharge to hibernate-cutoff without plugging in. After that cycle, the BIOS learn cycle rewrites against the new cell and the gauge returns to normal.

My Vision plus 5000 shuts off instantly under load but recovers when I plug in AC — what's happening?

Under full CPU and display load, the Ni-MH pack's terminal voltage sags quickly. When it drops below the BMS cutoff — around 9.0V on a 10.8V pack — the system shuts down even if the fuel gauge still shows charge remaining. This is a voltage cliff, not a faulty cell. Run two to three full discharge-to-hibernate cycles with uninterrupted recharge to 100% each time; the fuel gauge IC recalibrates its discharge curve and the premature shutdowns stop.

The system info panel on the Vision plus 5000 shows a lower Wh rating than the 43.2Wh spec — why is the number wrong?

The Wh figure shown in system info is pulled from EEPROM data embedded in the battery pack, and the value stored there reflects the rated capacity of the original cell chemistry, not a live measurement. A freshly installed Ni-MH replacement may report a different figure until the BIOS battery learn cycle runs and updates its reference. Complete one full discharge-to-hibernate followed by an uninterrupted charge to 100%; the reported Wh value should align with the 43.2Wh specification after that cycle.
