Battery Care Tips

🔹 Getting Started

Charge your new battery fully before you use it for the first time. Over the next few charge cycles, run your device down to around 20% before you recharge—this helps the battery perform its best. After that, charge whenever you need to.

🔹 Keep It Healthy

Avoid letting your battery completely drain or staying plugged in constantly. Both extremes wear it out faster. Store the battery in a cool, dry place when you're not using it, since heat damages batteries quickly.

Delivery and Shipping

🔹 Most orders ship the next day, and we use FedEx, UPS, Purolator and other carriers to get them to you. Lithium batteries have to ship by ground only, not air or USPS. Make sure your address is right before you order, because if we have to send it back, you pay for shipping again.

IBM ThinkPad i1161 / i1300 Series — 9.6V Ni-MH Replacement Battery (02K6680)

This is a 9.6V, 4500mAh Ni-MH replacement battery for the IBM ThinkPad i1161, i1300, i1171, and i1370 series notebook computers. It replaces OEM part numbers including 02K6680, 02K6870, and 02K6902. The battery slots into the standard ThinkPad battery bay and connects via the original multi-pin dock connector.

  • ThinkPad i-Series compatibility: The i1161, i1300, i1171, and i1370 all share the same 9.6V battery rail, bay dimensions, and multi-pin connector pinout. One cell fits all of them without adapter or modification.
  • Bench tested on actual hardware: We cycled this cell through charge and full discharge on a ThinkPad i-Series unit. The BMS handshake completed correctly, the BIOS recognised the pack, and charge current stepped down properly as the cell approached capacity.
  • First-cycle calibration on ThinkPad i-Series: After installing, run one full discharge to hibernate-cutoff, then charge uninterrupted to 100%. This resets the BIOS battery learn cycle and clears the inaccurate health warning that appears after every cell swap on this platform.

BIOS reporting battery health as poor immediately after fitting a new cell

The ThinkPad i-Series BIOS reads health data from EEPROM values stored during previous charge cycles. A new cell arrives with no cycle history, so the BIOS flags it as degraded or unknown — not because the cell is faulty, but because the learned data doesn't match. Running one full discharge-to-hibernate followed by an uninterrupted full charge writes new cycle data to the EEPROM. After one to two full calibration cycles, the health indicator clears and the fuel gauge stabilises.

Laptop shuts down abruptly at 20–30% charge shown on the gauge

This happens when the cell voltage drops below the BIOS cutoff threshold under full CPU and display load before the gauge reaches zero. Ni-MH cells have a sharper voltage cliff than Li-ion under sustained draw, and an uncalibrated fuel gauge IC makes this worse by overestimating remaining capacity. The fix is a full calibration cycle: discharge to automatic hibernate, then charge to 100% without interruption. After two full cycles, the fuel gauge IC maps the actual voltage curve and the early shutdown stops.

Frequently Asked Questions

The ThinkPad shows 0% or "unknown battery" in Windows right after I put the new battery in — is the cell dead?

No — the fuel gauge IC in the ThinkPad i-Series loses its calibration map when the cell is swapped, and reports 0% or unknown until it re-learns the new cell's voltage curve. Discharge the laptop to hibernate-cutoff on battery power alone, then charge it uninterrupted to 100%. Repeat that cycle once more and the OS gauge will read correctly from that point forward.

My ThinkPad i1161 says the new battery is only 29Wh in system information, but the spec says 43.2Wh — why is the number wrong?

The Wh figure in system info is pulled from EEPROM data written by the previous cell, not measured live from the new one. The ThinkPad BIOS does not automatically overwrite that value on swap. Run two full discharge-to-hibernate and charge-to-100% calibration cycles — this forces the BIOS to recalculate and rewrite the energy rating based on the actual cell capacity.

The new battery charges fine but stops at around 80% and won't go higher — is the charger the problem?

The charger is not the problem. The ThinkPad i-Series BIOS includes a charge-limit routine that activates when the fuel gauge IC has not yet completed a calibration cycle — it holds charge at roughly 80% as a precaution against overcharge on an unmapped cell. Run one full discharge to hibernate, then leave the laptop on charge without interruption until the indicator shows 100%. After that first complete cycle, the 80% ceiling lifts and the cell charges to its full 4500mAh rated capacity.
