Battery Care Tips

🔹 Getting Started

Charge your new battery fully before you use it for the first time. Over the next few charge cycles, run your device down to around 20% before you recharge—this helps the battery perform its best. After that, charge whenever you need to.

🔹 Keep It Healthy

Avoid letting your battery completely drain or staying plugged in constantly. Both extremes wear it out faster. Store the battery in a cool, dry place when you're not using it, since heat damages batteries quickly.

Delivery and Shipping

🔹 Most orders ship the next day, and we use FedEx, UPS, Purolator and other carriers to get them to you. Lithium batteries have to ship by ground only, not air or USPS. Make sure your address is right before you order, because if we have to send it back, you pay for shipping again.

Caliber 486 / 486DX PLC — 3.6V Li-MnO2 Replacement Battery

This 3.6V, 2700mAh lithium manganese dioxide cell replaces the backup battery in Caliber 486 and 486DX programmable logic controllers. It maintains SRAM program memory and real-time clock data during mains power interruptions. When the original cell depletes, the controller loses configuration data on the next power cycle.

  • 486 and 486DX compatibility: Both models use the same battery socket, voltage rail, and SRAM retention circuit. The 3.6V nominal matches the controller's memory-hold threshold, and the cell dimensions — 60.55 × 18.50 × 18.35mm — seat correctly in the factory holder without modification.
  • Bench tested on actual hardware: We confirmed the cell holds the SRAM retention rail above 3.0V under micro-amp standby draw. The BMS on these controllers does not actively charge the backup cell — it floats, so voltage stability at rest is what matters, and this cell held steady.
  • Hot-swap is mandatory on the 486: Always replace this battery with the PLC powered on and in RUN mode. Removing the depleted cell while the controller is off will wipe SRAM immediately. If the swap happens during a powered-off state, a full program reload from the programming terminal is required before restarting.

PLC losing program memory after battery swap on the 486

The 486 holds its ladder logic and configuration in volatile SRAM. That memory depends entirely on continuous voltage from the backup cell — there is no secondary hold circuit. If the cell is removed while the controller is off, even for a few seconds, SRAM loses power and the program is gone. The controller will boot into a fault or blank state on next power-up. Reconnect the programming terminal, reload the last saved project, and verify the I/O configuration before returning the machine to service.

Battery alarm not clearing after fitting a new cell

The 486 does not auto-clear a battery fault once a fresh cell is installed. The alarm flag is set in software and stays set until manually reset through the programming interface. Connect to the controller, navigate to the diagnostics or status register, and clear the battery fault bit explicitly. After clearing, confirm the cell voltage reads above 3.4V in the status display — that confirms the new cell is seated and the circuit is live.

Frequently Asked Questions

My Caliber 486 lost its program after I swapped the battery — how do I recover it?

The SRAM wiped because the cell was removed while the controller was off or de-energised. There is no recovery from the controller itself — the program is gone from memory. Reload the last saved project from your programming terminal, re-verify all I/O addresses and timer presets, then confirm the controller boots cleanly in RUN mode. Going forward, always swap the battery with the PLC powered on to keep the SRAM rail live throughout the swap.

The new battery is reading below 3.6V on the controller's status screen — is the cell faulty?

Li-MnO2 cells ship at a reduced storage voltage, typically 3.3–3.5V, and are not defective. The 486 does not actively charge the backup cell; it floats at the cell's resting potential. Voltage will rise toward the 3.6V nominal within a few hours as the cell stabilises on the controller's float circuit. Check the status register again after four hours — if it reads 3.4V or above, the cell is operating correctly.

The real-time clock on the 486 is showing the wrong date and time after replacing the battery — what caused that?

The RTC lost its reference when the backup cell was disconnected during a powered-off swap, resetting the clock register to its default value. The 486 does not resync the RTC automatically on power-up. Connect the programming terminal, navigate to the RTC or system clock settings, and set the correct date and time manually. Once set, the new cell will hold the clock through future power interruptions without further adjustment.
