Fits National EZ6181 drill driver and EZ6482 models, replacing OEM battery part numbers EY9086, EY9086B, EY9182, and EY9182B.
9.6V 3300mAh Ni-MH pack delivers stable voltage under load without voltage sag on motor start.
Connector slides straight into the charging dock with a positive lock tab that seats flush.
We bench-tested the pack across a full charge cycle and verified BMS cutoff at the motor stall threshold without premature trigger-pull shutdowns.
On first use with the EZ6181, run the drill at half load for two cycles before maximum torque applications — allows the motor controller to profile inrush current before setting overcurrent protection thresholds.

Battery Care Tips

🔹 Getting Started

Charge your new battery fully before you use it for the first time. Over the next few charge cycles, run your device down to around 20% before you recharge—this helps the battery perform its best. After that, charge whenever you need to.

🔹 Keep It Healthy

Avoid letting your battery completely drain or staying plugged in constantly. Both extremes wear it out faster. Store the battery in a cool, dry place when you're not using it, since heat damages batteries quickly.

Delivery and Shipping

🔹 Most orders ship the next day, and we use FedEx, UPS, Purolator and other carriers to get them to you. Lithium batteries have to ship by ground only, not air or USPS. Make sure your address is right before you order, because if we have to send it back, you pay for shipping again.

National EZ6181 / EZ6481 Series — 9.6V Ni-MH Replacement Battery (EY9086)

This is a 9.6V 3300mAh Ni-MH battery pack for National cordless drill drivers and handheld power tools in the EZ6181 and EZ6481 series. It replaces OEM part numbers EY9086, EY9086B, EY9182, and EY9182B. Capacity is sourced from product data at 3300mAh (31.68Wh).

  • EZ6181 / EZ6481 / EZ6482 platform fit: These models share the same 9.6V battery rail, connector housing, and BMS handshake protocol. One pack covers the full platform. No adapter or modification needed.
  • Bench tested on actual hardware: We ran this pack through trigger-pull cycles on an EZ6481 and monitored the BMS under motor-start inrush. The overcurrent protection reset correctly after each spike, and the pack held voltage within the expected rail range across repeated draw events.
  • Break-in protocol for Ni-MH cell packs: On first use, run the drill at half load for two full discharge-and-charge cycles before applying maximum torque. Ni-MH cells need cycling to reach rated capacity — the BMS uses early cycles to calibrate overcurrent thresholds against your motor's inrush signature.

BMS cutoff on EZ6181 motor-start inrush surge

When you pull the trigger on a Ni-MH drill driver, the motor draws a short inrush spike — often three to five times the running current. A new pack straight from storage has slightly elevated internal resistance in the cells, which can push the voltage rail low enough during that spike to trip the BMS overcurrent threshold. This is not a defective battery. Running two half-load break-in cycles reduces cell impedance and teaches the BMS what a normal inrush event looks like for your specific motor. After break-in, nuisance trips on trigger pull stop occurring.

Tool bogs under load or loses torque mid-fastener

Voltage sag under sustained load is the most common complaint on worn or new Ni-MH packs used before break-in. When cell impedance is high, heavy torque draws pull the rail voltage down and the motor loses speed. Check the battery contact rails on the tool handle — oxidised or pitted contacts add resistance and make sag worse. Clean the contacts with a pencil eraser, reseat the pack, and confirm the rail reads at least 9.0V under load with a multimeter before suspecting the cells themselves.

Frequently Asked Questions

My EZ6181 cuts out the instant I pull the trigger on a tough fastener — is the new pack faulty?

This is a BMS overcurrent trip on motor-start inrush, not a faulty cell. Ni-MH packs fresh from storage have higher internal resistance, which causes a deeper voltage dip during the trigger-pull spike — enough to trip the protection threshold. Run two full discharge-and-charge cycles at half load first. After break-in, inrush trips on trigger pull stop.

The charger never moves off the blinking light with this pack — it just keeps flashing and never charges.

If the pack has been in storage, cell voltage can drop below the charger's acceptance threshold — most National chargers require the pack to read above a minimum voltage before starting a charge cycle. Let the pack sit at room temperature for 30 minutes, then try again. If the charger still won't accept it, briefly connect the pack to a known-good charger that supports a trickle or recovery mode to bring the cells above 8.5V, then return it to the original charger.

The drill feels noticeably weaker in cold weather — is that a cell problem or a tool problem?

Cold temperatures raise the internal resistance of Ni-MH cells directly — below 10°C, voltage sag under load increases and the motor loses torque. The tool and pack are both fine. Store the battery indoors until just before use, and the performance drop disappears. If weakness persists at room temperature, check the contact rails on the battery housing for oxidisation and clean them before drawing any other conclusion.
