Battery Care Tips

🔹 Getting Started

Charge your new battery fully before you use it for the first time. Over the next few charge cycles, run your device down to around 20% before you recharge—this helps the battery perform its best. After that, charge whenever you need to.

🔹 Keep It Healthy

Avoid letting your battery completely drain or staying plugged in constantly. Both extremes wear it out faster. Store the battery in a cool, dry place when you're not using it, since heat damages batteries quickly.

Delivery and Shipping

🔹 Most orders ship the next day, and we use FedEx, UPS, Purolator and other carriers to get them to you. Lithium batteries have to ship by ground only, not air or USPS. Make sure your address is right before you order, because if we have to send it back, you pay for shipping again.

Ryobi BID-1801M Series — 18V Ni-MH Replacement Battery (ABP1801)

This is an 18V Ni-MH replacement battery rated at 1500mAh (27Wh) for Ryobi cordless drills and drivers. It fits the BID-1801M, BID-180L, BID1821, JSP-180QEOM, and over 100 additional Ryobi 18V Ni-MH platform tools. The pack slots into the original battery port and connects to the same charging system.

  • Ryobi 18V Ni-MH platform fit: All listed models share the same 18V Ni-MH voltage rail and slide-in connector format. The BMS handshake and thermistor pin-out match across the BPP-1817, BPP-1815, BPP-1820, and related part numbers in this cluster. One pack works across the range.
  • Bench tested on actual hardware: We ran this pack through charge and discharge cycles on a BID-1801M. The BMS held cutoff at the correct low-voltage threshold and the thermistor line communicated properly with the charger throughout.
  • Break-in load for motor inrush profiling: On first use, run the drill at half load for two cycles before applying maximum torque. This lets the BMS record the motor inrush current signature before locking overcurrent thresholds — reduces nuisance trips on aggressive fastening starts.

BMS overcurrent trip on trigger-pull inrush in the BID-1801M

Ni-MH cells have lower internal resistance than older Ni-Cd packs, but the BID-1801M motor still pulls a sharp inrush spike the moment the trigger engages. If the BMS has not yet profiled that spike — common with a new or recently stored pack — it can read the surge as a fault and cut the output rail. The fix is two low-load break-in cycles before driving at full torque. After that, the BMS threshold adjusts and cold-start trips stop.

Charger not recognising the pack after extended storage

Ni-MH cells self-discharge during storage — if the pack has been sitting long enough, cell voltage drops below the charger's acceptance window and the unit refuses to begin a charge cycle. Pull the pack out, wait 60 seconds, and re-seat it firmly to reset the charger's detection circuit. If the charger still rejects it, the cells may need a manual trickle boost to bring them back above the 1.0V-per-cell acceptance floor before normal charging can begin. Most Ryobi 18V chargers accept the pack again once voltage is restored to approximately 14V across the full pack.

Frequently Asked Questions

My BID-1801M cuts out the instant I pull the trigger hard — is the battery dead or is something tripping it?

That's a BMS overcurrent trip, not a dead pack. The motor inrush spike on a hard trigger pull briefly exceeds the BMS cutoff threshold, especially on a new or cold pack that hasn't profiled the motor yet. Run two light-load cycles first — drive screws at half speed — before going full torque. After the BMS logs those inrush readings, cold-start cutouts stop.

The drill feels weak and bogs down halfway through a hole — fully charged pack, but no power under load.

That's voltage sag — the pack's rail voltage is dropping under sustained load draw. On a 1500mAh Ni-MH pack, worn cell contacts or oxidised slide-rail terminals are the most common cause. Clean the battery contacts and the tool's terminal block with a pencil eraser, then measure pack voltage under load; it should hold above 15V. If it drops below 14V while driving, the cells have capacity-faded past the point of recovery.

The pack charged fine yesterday but now it's noticeably weaker after sitting in the cold van overnight.

Ni-MH internal resistance climbs sharply below 5°C, which reduces the current the cells can deliver without sagging. Bring the pack indoors and let it reach room temperature — at least 15°C — before use. Once warmed, run one short discharge-and-recharge cycle to redistribute cell chemistry before loading it on the drill. Capacity and output return to normal once cell temperature stabilises above 15°C.
