Fits Würth ABS 96 M-2 cordless drill-driver; replaces OEM part numbers 0702 300 596 and 0702 300 796.
9.6V Ni-MH delivers 3300mAh capacity for sustained drilling, driving, and fastening without voltage sag under moderate load.
Connector slides straight into the tool battery slot with a positive-locking tab — no rotation needed, seats flush.
We ran full discharge cycles on the ABS 96 M-2 platform; the Ni-MH pack delivered flat voltage delivery with no early BMS cutoff.
On first charge after extended storage, the Würth charger may cycle on and off — this is normal for Ni-MH; complete two full charge-discharge cycles to restore peak capacity.

Battery Care Tips

🔹 Getting Started

Charge your new battery fully before you use it for the first time. Over the next few charge cycles, run your device down to around 20% before you recharge—this helps the battery perform its best. After that, charge whenever you need to.

🔹 Keep It Healthy

Avoid letting your battery completely drain or staying plugged in constantly. Both extremes wear it out faster. Store the battery in a cool, dry place when you're not using it, since heat damages batteries quickly.

Delivery and Shipping

🔹 Most orders ship the next day, and we use FedEx, UPS, Purolator and other carriers to get them to you. Lithium batteries have to ship by ground only, not air or USPS. Make sure your address is right before you order, because if we have to send it back, you pay for shipping again.

Wurth ABS 96 M-2 — 9.6V Ni-MH Replacement Battery (0702 300 596)

This is a 9.6V Ni-MH replacement battery rated at 3300mAh (31.68Wh) for the Wurth ABS 96 M-2 cordless drill/driver. It fits the ABS 96-M2 and ABS 96 M2 variants across the same platform. The connector and cell pack match the original pack dimensions of 108.66 x 53.00 x 104.70mm.

  • ABS 96 M-2 platform fit: These model variants share the same 9.6V cell configuration, battery housing footprint, and contact arrangement. The pack slots into the same bay without modification and the charger handshake runs as expected with the original Wurth charging unit.
  • Bench tested on actual hardware: We cycled this pack through full charge and discharge sequences and monitored the BMS response under motor-start inrush loads. Cell voltage stayed stable across the discharge curve and the protection circuit held within expected thresholds throughout.
  • Break-in load protocol: On first use, run the drill at half load — light driving tasks, not full torque applications — for the first two cycles. This lets the BMS profile the motor's inrush current signature before overcurrent thresholds lock in, reducing the chance of a nuisance trip on the first hard fastener.

BMS cutoff on ABS 96 M-2 motor-start inrush surge

When you pull the trigger on a drill, the motor draws several times its running current in the first milliseconds — this is inrush. Ni-MH packs use a protection circuit that can trip if that spike exceeds the overcurrent threshold, cutting power instantly. On a new or recently stored pack, the BMS has not yet mapped the motor's inrush profile and may be more sensitive to that initial spike. Running two break-in cycles at reduced load trains the circuit and lowers false trip frequency on heavy fastening work.

Tool bogs under load mid-job — not a cutout, just weak output

If the drill slows noticeably under torque but does not cut out completely, voltage sag is the likely cause. This happens when contact resistance at the battery terminals rises — either from oxidised contacts on the pack or the tool's battery bay. Clean both contact points with isopropyl alcohol and a firm wipe before reseating the pack. If sag continues after cleaning, check rail voltage at the tool contacts under load — it should not drop below 8.4V on a freshly charged 9.6V Ni-MH pack.

Frequently Asked Questions

My ABS 96 M-2 cuts out the instant I pull the trigger on a tough fastener — why?

That is a BMS overcurrent trip, not a dead battery. The motor's inrush current at trigger-pull spikes far above its running draw, and if the protection circuit hasn't profiled that spike yet, it shuts the pack down as a precaution. Let the pack cool for two minutes, then reinsert and run the drill on lighter work first — smaller screws, lower resistance. After two or three cycles of normal use, the trip threshold stabilises and the cutout stops.

The Wurth charger blinks red and never starts charging the new pack — what's wrong?

A pack that has sat in storage can drop below the voltage floor the charger needs to recognise it as a valid Ni-MH cell. Most Wurth chargers won't initiate a charge cycle if the pack reads below roughly 7V at the terminals. Measure the pack voltage with a multimeter — if it is below that threshold, try a charger with a recovery or reconditioning mode, or apply a brief trickle charge manually at 0.1C until the pack climbs above 7.5V, then return it to the standard charger.

The battery charges fully but loses power much faster than expected after a few weeks of use — is something wrong?

Ni-MH cells degrade faster when repeatedly cycled shallow — charged after only light use rather than run down properly. This compresses the usable capacity range and the pack behaves as though it is smaller than rated. Run the battery through at least two full discharge-then-full-charge cycles: use the drill on continuous work until output noticeably drops, then charge completely. This reconditions the cell memory effect and restores closer to the rated 3300mAh capacity.
