Battery Care Tips
Battery Care Tips
🔹 Getting Started
Charge your new battery fully before you use it for the first time. Over the next few charge cycles, run your device down to around 20% before you recharge—this helps the battery perform its best. After that, charge whenever you need to.
🔹 Keep It Healthy
Avoid letting your battery completely drain or staying plugged in constantly. Both extremes wear it out faster. Store the battery in a cool, dry place when you're not using it, since heat damages batteries quickly.

Delivery and Shipping
🔹 Most orders ship the next day, and we use FedEx, UPS, Purolator and other carriers to get them to you. Lithium batteries have to ship by ground only, not air or USPS. Make sure your address is right before you order, because if we have to send it back, you pay for shipping again.

IBM 571F / 572F RAID Controller — 3.7V Li-Polymer Replacement Battery (42R3965)
This 3.7V, 3600mAh lithium-polymer cell replaces the backup cache battery in IBM RAID controllers including the 571F, 572F, 5739, and 5778 series. It powers the controller's write-back cache during a power loss event, holding cached data in memory until it can be flushed to disk. Without a functional battery, the controller falls back to write-through mode, cutting cache performance significantly.
- 571F / 572F / 5739 / 5778 cache module fit: These controllers share the same backup battery rail at 3.7V and use the same physical connector and BMS handshake tied to OEM part 42R3965. Cross-references 74Y5665 and 42R3969 map to the same cell specification and are interchangeable across this controller family.
- Bench tested on actual hardware: We cycled this cell through charge, load, and BMS communication checks. The protection circuit responded correctly to undervoltage cutoff and communicated state-of-charge data back to the controller interface without error flags.
-
Post-swap learn cycle required:
After installation, trigger a battery learn cycle from the controller management interface — use
system controller battery showin ONTAP orStorCLI /cx bbu showfor Broadcom/LSI. The controller will not recalibrate its backup window estimate until the learn cycle completes, which keeps it in write-through mode until that process finishes.
RAID controller staying in write-through mode after battery swap
Swapping the battery does not automatically return the controller to write-back mode. The controller holds write-through until it completes a full learn cycle and recalculates the backup window against the new cell's actual capacity. This process runs under normal load and takes 24–72 hours depending on the controller model and charge state. Until the cycle completes, the controller treats the backup window as unknown and refuses to enable write-back cache.
Management console reporting a battery fault days after installation
IBM RAID controllers run their battery health assessment on a timed interval, not at boot. If the console surfaces a battery error two or three days post-swap, the assessment has likely run against a cell still mid-learn-cycle. The BMS reports a degraded backup window because recalibration has not finished. Let the learn cycle complete fully, then check status again with system controller battery show — the error clears once the controller has a validated backup window reading.

Frequently Asked Questions
My controller switched back to write-through mode right after I installed the new battery — is the cell faulty?
No — this is expected behaviour. The controller disables write-back cache any time it cannot confirm a valid backup window, and a fresh cell has no calibrated window yet. A learn cycle must complete before the controller re-enables write-back. Trigger it manually via ONTAP (`system controller battery show`) or StorCLI (`/cx bbu show`) and allow 24–72 hours under normal load.
The battery self-test is failing in the management interface — the cell arrived fully charged, so what's wrong?
A full charge state at arrival does not satisfy the self-test. The controller's BMS needs a complete charge-discharge-recharge learn cycle to validate backup window duration against the actual cell. Self-test failure clears once that cycle finishes — it is not a defect in the cell itself. Check charge progression in StorCLI with `/cx bbu show all` and confirm the cycle status field moves from "Learning" to "Operational."
The backup window shown in ONTAP is shorter than what the original battery provided — should it match exactly?
Backup window estimates recalibrate over two to three full learn cycles as the controller maps the cell's actual discharge curve. A shorter initial reading is normal when the BMS has only one partial cycle of data. After the second or third complete cycle, the window estimate stabilises. Run `system controller battery show` after each cycle and confirm the backup window reading climbs above 72 hours, which is the minimum threshold for write-back mode on most IBM RAID controllers.
