Fits Philips BT9290, HC3410, HC3426, HC5446 shavers; replaces OEM part 4238 118 20585.
2.4V, 700mAh Ni-MH cell delivers full motor torque on the BT9290 rotary head without voltage sag.
Connector slides straight into the battery chamber; locking tab seats flush against the retention clip.
Bench testing showed stable voltage delivery under motor load; BMS cutoff engaged cleanly at discharge end.
On first insertion, the shaver may not power on — reseat the battery fully and try again, as Philips shavers require firm contact pressure to register the new cell.

Battery Care Tips

🔹 Getting Started

Charge your new battery fully before you use it for the first time. Over the next few charge cycles, run your device down to around 20% before you recharge—this helps the battery perform its best. After that, charge whenever you need to.

🔹 Keep It Healthy

Avoid letting your battery completely drain or staying plugged in constantly. Both extremes wear it out faster. Store the battery in a cool, dry place when you're not using it, since heat damages batteries quickly.

Delivery and Shipping

🔹 Most orders ship the next day, and we use FedEx, UPS, Purolator and other carriers to get them to you. Lithium batteries have to ship by ground only, not air or USPS. Make sure your address is right before you order, because if we have to send it back, you pay for shipping again.

Philips BT9290 / HC3410 Series — 2.4V Ni-MH Replacement Battery (4238 118 20585)

This is a 2.4V, 700mAh Ni-MH replacement battery for the Philips BT9290 cordless shaver and compatible grooming devices in the HC3410, HC3426, and HC5446 series. It replaces OEM part number 4238 118 20585. Use this when the original cell no longer holds enough charge to complete a full shave cycle.

  • BT9290 and HC-series compatibility: These models share the same 2.4V two-cell Ni-MH configuration, connector pitch, and physical form factor — 44.50 x 21.00 x 10.70mm. The shaver's charge management circuit expects that specific voltage window, so swapping in any other chemistry will trigger a protection fault.
  • Bench tested on actual hardware: We cycled this cell through full charge and discharge runs on the BT9290 platform. The charge circuit accepted the battery without fault codes, and the cell held voltage within the expected Ni-MH discharge curve under motor load.
  • Waterproof model port care: Dry the charging port completely before connecting to the charger after rinsing. Moisture bridging the charging contacts causes a protection trip that the shaver reports as a dead battery — not a charging error. A 30-minute air dry resolves it in most cases.

Capacity fade from daily partial charging on the BT9290

Ni-MH cells develop a voltage depression effect when repeatedly charged before fully depleting — this is the memory effect specific to this chemistry. On a shaver used daily and docked after every use, the cell learns a shorter voltage window and the indicator drifts early. Running the battery fully down to motor cutoff once every three to four weeks resets the effective capacity the charge circuit sees. This is not a fault with the replacement cell — it is a characteristic of Ni-MH under shallow cycling.

Shaver motor slows down before the low-battery indicator activates

This happens because the shaver's indicator circuit reads a threshold voltage, but the motor draws enough current to sag the cell voltage below the motor's effective operating point before that threshold triggers. The indicator is measuring resting voltage, not load voltage. Under the motor's pull, an aged or partially degraded cell drops faster than the display reflects. If this replacement cell shows the same symptom after a full break-in cycle, check that the dock contacts are clean — oxidised contacts increase resistance and amplify voltage sag at the cell terminals. Clean contacts with a dry cloth and retest at 2.4V nominal.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why does my BT9290 feel warm during a longer shave even with the new battery fitted?

Heat in this shaver comes from two sources running at once — the motor drawing continuous current and the Ni-MH cell discharging through a small plastic housing with limited airflow. Ni-MH chemistry generates more heat during discharge than lithium cells, and the compact BT9290 body traps that warmth. Warmth to the touch during a full shave cycle is normal. If the shaver gets hot enough to be uncomfortable, check that the motor head is clean — a clogged cutter increases current draw and raises both motor and cell temperature.

The BT9290 sits in the dock overnight but shows no charge in the morning — dock contacts or battery fault?

Oxidised dock contacts are the more likely cause. Cleaning products and tap water residue leave a film on the shaver's charge pins and dock terminals that blocks the low-current Ni-MH trickle charge. Wipe both the dock contacts and the shaver's charge plate with a dry cloth, then reseat the shaver — the charge indicator should activate within 60 seconds if contact resistance was the issue. If the indicator still does not activate, measure voltage at the dock contacts with a multimeter; the output should read approximately 2.8–3V DC.

After rinsing the shaver under the tap, the charge indicator flashes but the device won't charge — is the battery dead?

This is almost always a moisture-triggered protection trip, not a battery failure. Water bridging the charge contacts creates a short-circuit signal the BMS reads as a fault condition, and it locks out charging to protect the cell. Remove the shaver from the dock and let the charging port air dry for at least 30 minutes before reconnecting. Once dry, reseat it in the dock — the fault clears automatically and charging resumes at the normal 2.4V input.
