The MD125's battery indicator reads voltage at startup, not under load. During active sensor polling the current draw rises, and a partially discharged alkaline cell's terminal voltage can sag below the instrument's cutoff threshold even if the startup reading looked acceptable. This is a load-dependent dropout, not a faulty instrument. Replace the pack and run the calibration cycle from the instrument menu before your next session so the MD125 maps the fresh cell's voltage curve correctly.
Readings were logging normally, then the data on screen reset mid-session — the battery still showed charge. What caused that?
A brief voltage dropout under sustained sensor load can cause the MD125 to lose its active session state without fully powering off. The cell voltage recovers quickly at rest, so the instrument restarts and the indicator looks normal — but the logging data is gone. This is different from a clean shutdown. Check that the pack's open-circuit voltage reads at or above 5.8V before a logging session; a cell that low will drop further under load.
The MD125 sat in the carry case for several months and now won't power on with what looks like a full battery — is the pack dead?
Alkaline cells self-discharge during storage, and the MD125 needs a minimum voltage at the terminals to initialise. A pack that sat unused may measure below 5.8V open-circuit, which is too low for the instrument to start. Measure the HO-11787 pack directly with a multimeter before installing — if it reads below 5.8V, install a fresh pack. If the new pack still produces no response, hold the power button for 10 seconds to clear any latched fault state in the instrument.
