Battery Care Tips
Battery Care Tips
🔹 Getting Started
Charge your new battery fully before you use it for the first time. Over the next few charge cycles, run your device down to around 20% before you recharge—this helps the battery perform its best. After that, charge whenever you need to.
🔹 Keep It Healthy
Avoid letting your battery completely drain or staying plugged in constantly. Both extremes wear it out faster. Store the battery in a cool, dry place when you're not using it, since heat damages batteries quickly.

Delivery and Shipping
🔹 Most orders ship the next day, and we use FedEx, UPS, Purolator and other carriers to get them to you. Lithium batteries have to ship by ground only, not air or USPS. Make sure your address is right before you order, because if we have to send it back, you pay for shipping again.

Itemiser 4DX Handheld Explosive Detector — 14.4V Li-ion Replacement Battery
This 14.4V 6400mAh Li-ion battery fits the Itemiser 4DX Handheld Explosive Detector. The 4DX is a portable trace explosive screening unit used at airports, border crossings, and security checkpoints. It runs ion mobility spectrometry, which draws sustained current from the battery pack during every scan cycle.
- 4DX platform fit: The 4DX uses a 14.4V bus to power both the IMS detection module and the onboard heater array simultaneously. Both loads draw from the same pack. A battery with mismatched voltage tolerance will trip the instrument's protection circuit before the heater reaches operating temperature.
- Bench tested on actual hardware: We cycled this pack through full IMS warm-up sequences and repeated scan loads. The BMS held steady through the combined heater-plus-detector draw without triggering cutoff at operational temperature.
- Post-install calibration requirement: After fitting this battery, run a full calibration cycle through the instrument menu before deploying in the field. The 4DX maps battery state during calibration. Skipping this step causes premature low-battery warnings to appear during the first active screening session, even when the pack is fully charged.
Why the 4DX shuts down at the start of a scan cycle despite showing a charged battery
At scan initiation, the IMS heater array and detector module both power up within milliseconds of each other. This creates a brief but sharp current spike that can exceed the cutoff threshold of a degraded or cold cell pack. The instrument interprets this as an overcurrent event and shuts down as a protective measure — not a software fault. A fresh pack with healthy internal resistance handles the combined inrush without voltage sag dropping below the BMS trip point. If shutdowns occur only at scan start, the pack is the first thing to check, not the instrument firmware.
4DX not recognising a new battery after the unit sat unused for several months
Li-ion cells that sit discharged below approximately 2.5V per cell enter a deep-discharge state where the BMS stops responding to the charger. The instrument sees no pack handshake and either shows no battery indicator or fails to power on. Place the battery on the OEM charger and leave it connected for at least 30 minutes before attempting to power the unit — most BMS circuits require a trickle recovery current to re-initialise the protection IC. If the charger shows no activity after 45 minutes, the cells have self-discharged past the recovery threshold and the pack will need replacing.

Frequently Asked Questions
The 4DX powers on and warms up fine, but readings reset or drop mid-session without any warning — is this the battery?
Yes, this is a known symptom of voltage dropout under sustained sensor load. The IMS module draws continuous current during active screening, and a pack with degraded cells will sag below the instrument's minimum voltage threshold mid-session, causing the processor to reset without triggering a formal low-battery alert. It is not a software glitch. Check the pack's resting voltage with a multimeter — a healthy 14.4V Li-ion pack at partial charge should read above 13.8V at rest; anything below that under no load points to cell degradation.
The 4DX shuts off every time it tries to transfer data to a PC via USB — the battery looks fine otherwise.
USB data transfer adds a second simultaneous load on top of the instrument's own processor and display draw. If the pack's cells have lost capacity, the combined draw during transfer pushes the BMS to its cutoff point even though the battery handles lighter tasks without issue. This is a different failure from a scan-cycle shutdown — it appears only when the USB port is active. To confirm, check whether the unit completes a full transfer when connected to a powered USB hub rather than a bus-powered laptop port; if it does, the pack is the limiting factor, not the cable or software.
The battery percentage on the 4DX display jumps around or shows a different level every time the unit restarts — is the pack faulty?
This is a voltage-threshold recalibration issue, not necessarily a faulty pack. The 4DX estimates charge state from cell voltage, and a new or recently replaced pack has not yet been mapped by the instrument's internal reference. The display will show inconsistent percentages until the instrument runs a full calibration cycle and logs the new pack's voltage curve. Go into the instrument menu, run the calibration routine, then charge the battery to 100% and allow one full discharge before trusting the percentage readout.
