Fits South X11 Data Controller; replaces OEM battery BP-5S for uninterrupted field surveying and data collection operations.
Delivers 7.4V at 3400mAh capacity; sustained output supports extended measurement sessions without mid-survey power loss or sensor dropout.
Connector type matches original slot orientation; locking tab seats flush against controller housing without force or twisting required.
We bench-tested this pack under sustained probe load; BMS held voltage steady through full sensor initialization cycles without nuisance cutoff.
After installation, run a full calibration cycle through the instrument menu before field deployment — the X11 maps battery state during calibration, and skipping this step causes premature low-battery warnings on the first measurement session.

Battery Care Tips

🔹 Getting Started

Charge your new battery fully before you use it for the first time. Over the next few charge cycles, run your device down to around 20% before you recharge—this helps the battery perform its best. After that, charge whenever you need to.

🔹 Keep It Healthy

Avoid letting your battery completely drain or staying plugged in constantly. Both extremes wear it out faster. Store the battery in a cool, dry place when you're not using it, since heat damages batteries quickly.

Delivery and Shipping

🔹 Most orders ship the next day, and we use FedEx, UPS, Purolator and other carriers to get them to you. Lithium batteries have to ship by ground only, not air or USPS. Make sure your address is right before you order, because if we have to send it back, you pay for shipping again.

South X11 Data Controller — 7.4V Li-ion Replacement Battery (BP-5S)

This is a 7.4V, 3400mAh Li-ion replacement battery for the South X11 Data Controller. It fits the X11 directly, using the same connector and BMS handshake as the original BP-5S pack. Capacity figures come from the product data — 25.16Wh at the rated 3400mAh.

  • X11 platform fit: The X11 Data Controller runs a 7.4V two-cell Li-ion architecture. The BP-5S form factor matches the bay dimensions — 70.70 × 39.40 × 21.70mm — and the BMS communicates over the same data line the X11 uses to report state of charge to the instrument firmware.
  • Bench tested on actual hardware: We cycled this pack under a sustained sensor-load profile, simulating continuous GNSS logging and probe polling. The BMS held voltage regulation within tolerance and did not trip under the initialisation current spike that occurs when the X11 powers up its sensor modules.
  • Pre-deployment calibration step: After fitting this pack, run a full calibration cycle through the X11 instrument menu before heading into the field. The controller maps battery state during that calibration pass — skipping it causes the low-battery warning to fire early during your first measurement session, even with a full charge.

BMS lockout after the X11 sat unused in a carry case for months

Li-ion cells in the BP-5S self-discharge slowly during storage. If the pack drops below approximately 2.5V per cell, the BMS enters a protective sleep state and refuses to accept a charge through the X11's standard charge port. The instrument will show no charge indicator at all — not a slow charge, nothing. To recover the pack, apply a low-current pre-charge (around 0.1C) directly to the pack terminals using a compatible bench charger until cell voltage climbs above 3.0V per cell, then return it to the X11 charger normally.

X11 display showing erratic battery percentage after swapping packs

The X11 tracks battery state using a voltage-threshold model calibrated to the previous pack's discharge curve. When a new cell set with slightly different internal resistance is installed, the instrument's percentage readout can jump or drop unexpectedly across the first few charge-discharge cycles. This is not a fault in the battery — it is the controller recalibrating its threshold map. Run two full charge-discharge cycles through normal field use and the percentage display will stabilise to within a few percent of actual remaining capacity.

Frequently Asked Questions

My South X11 shuts off the moment a connected sensor or probe initialises — why does a new battery not fix this?

Probe initialisation pulls a short current spike that can exceed the BMS trip threshold if the pack's cell voltage is slightly low at that moment. We saw this on the bench when the pack was below 7.0V at rest — the BMS interpreted the spike as an overcurrent event and cut output. Charge the BP-5S to full before the first field session, confirm resting voltage reads at or above 7.4V, then power the X11 and allow the probe to initialise before starting a logging session.

The X11 powers on and logs fine, but readings reset or drop out partway through a long session — is this a battery issue?

Sustained sensor load draws continuous current that causes voltage to sag on a degraded or partially charged pack. When the supply voltage dips below the X11's internal threshold — typically around 6.8V under load — the instrument can momentarily drop power to the sensor board, which resets the active reading. This is different from a full shutdown. Charge the pack fully before extended sessions and check that the battery contacts in the bay are clean and seated firmly, as even slight resistance adds to effective voltage drop under load.

The BP-5S will not charge at all after the X11 sat in storage for several months — the charger shows no activity.

Extended storage allows the cells to self-discharge below the BMS recovery threshold, which locks the pack out of standard charging. The X11 charger cannot push enough current to wake a pack in deep-sleep protection. Use a Li-ion bench charger with a pre-charge or recovery mode to apply roughly 0.1C to the pack terminals until cell voltage recovers above 3.0V per cell, then reconnect the BP-5S to the standard X11 charger and it should resume a normal charge cycle.
