Battery Care Tips

🔹 Getting Started

Charge your new battery fully before you use it for the first time. Over the next few charge cycles, run your device down to around 20% before you recharge—this helps the battery perform its best. After that, charge whenever you need to.

🔹 Keep It Healthy

Avoid letting your battery completely drain or staying plugged in constantly. Both extremes wear it out faster. Store the battery in a cool, dry place when you're not using it, since heat damages batteries quickly.

Delivery and Shipping

🔹 Most orders ship the next day, and we use FedEx, UPS, Purolator and other carriers to get them to you. Lithium batteries have to ship by ground only, not air or USPS. Make sure your address is right before you order, because if we have to send it back, you pay for shipping again.

Cobra LI7000 / LI7200 / CXR900 Series — 7.4V Li-ion Replacement Battery (FT443493P-25)

This is a 7.4V, 1500mAh Li-ion replacement battery for Cobra two-way radios including the LI7000, LI7020, LI7200, and CXR900. It uses OEM part number FT443493P-25, also cross-referenced as 103-0005-1, 103-1500-1, and COM-FT443493P. Drop it into any compatible Cobra dock charger and the BMS handshake starts automatically.

  • LI7000 / LI7200 / CXR900 platform fit: These models share the same 7.4V battery bay, connector pinout, and BMS communication protocol — one pack covers all of them without adapter or modification.
  • Bench tested on actual hardware: We cycled this pack through PTT transmit loads on a Cobra dock. The BMS handled the transmit current spike without tripping overcurrent, and the charge circuit accepted the pack cleanly on first insertion.
  • First insertion on a Cobra dock charger: If the dock LED flashes a fault on first seat, remove the pack, wipe the gold contact strip with a dry cloth, and reseat firmly. New cells ship at storage voltage — the dock needs a clean contact cycle to accept the BMS handshake before charging begins.

Why the LI7000 cuts out mid-transmission on a new battery

The LI7000 pulls a sharp current spike the moment PTT is pressed. If the battery BMS reads that spike as an overcurrent fault, it trips and the radio drops out instantly. This is not a radio fault — it is the BMS protecting cells that were at storage voltage when inserted. Running two or three short charge-discharge cycles brings cell voltage up to operating range, and the BMS stops tripping on transmit spikes.

Bar indicator showing fewer bars than expected after swap

Cobra's bar display reads voltage thresholds only — it does not track capacity. A new cell at storage voltage (typically around 3.7V per cell, 7.4V pack total) will show one or two bars even though the pack is not depleted. Charge the pack fully before reading the indicator. After a full charge cycle, the display should step up to full bars at or above 8.2V pack voltage.

Frequently Asked Questions

My Cobra LI7000 drops out the moment I press PTT — is the new battery faulty?

It is not faulty. The PTT transmit current spike is high enough to trigger the BMS overcurrent protection when cells are at storage voltage. Run two full charge-discharge cycles on the dock first. After the cells reach operating voltage, the BMS threshold clears and the radio holds transmission without cutting out.

The dock charger LED never turns green — it just blinks or stays amber after I insert the new pack.

A blinking or stuck amber LED almost always means the dock has not completed the BMS handshake. Remove the pack, wipe the gold contact strip with a dry cloth, and reseat it firmly. If the LED still does not progress to green, the cell voltage may be below the dock's acceptance threshold from extended storage — leave it seated for 15 minutes and the charger should recover the pack and begin a normal charge cycle.

The radio switches to noticeably weaker audio and TX power partway through a long shift — what is happening?

This is voltage sag under sustained RF output. As the pack discharges, cell voltage drops below the radio's high-power TX threshold and the LI7000 steps down to reduced output to protect the circuit. It is not a battery defect — it is normal behaviour at lower state of charge. If it happens earlier in the shift than expected, check that the pack reached a full charge before use; the dock LED should have gone solid green, confirming charge completion.
