Fits Black&Decker 15.6V DustBuster CHV1510 and replaces OEM part 90558173.
Delivers 15.6V and 2000mAh capacity — maintains motor torque under filter restriction and sustained suction draws.
Connector slides straight in with locking tab on top; orientation is keyed to prevent reverse insertion.
We charged this Ni-Cd pack on a Black&Decker charger and verified BMS acceptance; no fault codes on first cycle.
Remove the battery from the charging dock immediately after reaching full charge — continuous dock charging degrades Ni-Cd capacity within weeks.

Battery Care Tips

🔹 Getting Started

Charge your new battery fully before you use it for the first time. Over the next few charge cycles, run your device down to around 20% before you recharge—this helps the battery perform its best. After that, charge whenever you need to.

🔹 Keep It Healthy

Avoid letting your battery completely drain or staying plugged in constantly. Both extremes wear it out faster. Store the battery in a cool, dry place when you're not using it, since heat damages batteries quickly.

Delivery and Shipping

🔹 Most orders ship the next day, and we use FedEx, UPS, Purolator and other carriers to get them to you. Lithium batteries have to ship by ground only, not air or USPS. Make sure your address is right before you order, because if we have to send it back, you pay for shipping again.

Black&Decker 15.6V DustBuster / CHV1510 — 15.6V Ni-Cd Replacement Battery (90558173)

This is a 15.6V, 2000mAh Ni-Cd replacement battery for the Black&Decker DustBuster CHV1510 cordless handheld vacuum. It replaces OEM part number 90558173 directly. The battery restores full motor power to a vacuum that has lost suction strength or stopped holding charge.

  • CHV1510 platform fit: The CHV1510 and 15.6V DustBuster share the same cell configuration, connector pinout, and BMS communication protocol. Swapping the pack does not require any modification — the charger handshake runs identically on replacement cells.
  • Bench tested on actual hardware: We ran this pack through the CHV1510 motor draw cycle under simulated filter restriction. The BMS held steady through repeated high-draw bursts and did not trip prematurely. Capacity returned to rated output after three full charge-discharge cycles.
  • Dock charging habit on the CHV1510: Do not leave the DustBuster sitting on the charging dock permanently. Continuous trickle charging is the fastest way to degrade Ni-Cd cells in this unit. Charge to full, remove from the dock, and return it only when the vacuum noticeably weakens.

Suction dropping well before the battery indicator reaches low

Ni-Cd cells in the CHV1510 are voltage-sensitive under motor load. As cells age, internal resistance climbs — under suction load the voltage sags enough to reduce motor speed, even though resting voltage still reads acceptable. The battery indicator reads resting voltage, not load voltage, so it lags behind real performance. A new pack at rated capacity eliminates the sag — load voltage stays above the 12V threshold the motor needs for full RPM.

Motor cuts out mid-use and then recovers after a few seconds

This is a BMS overcurrent trip, not a motor fault. When the CHV1510 filter is partially blocked, the motor strains harder to maintain airflow and draws current above the BMS protection threshold. The BMS cuts the circuit, the motor stops, and after a brief cooldown the pack resets and power returns. Clearing the filter drops the draw back to normal operating current — typically below 3A — and the cutout stops. If the cutout persists with a clean filter, the original cells have degraded enough that internal resistance is amplifying the apparent load.

Frequently Asked Questions

My CHV1510 loses strong suction halfway through cleaning even though the battery light isn't flashing — why?

The battery indicator on the CHV1510 reads resting voltage, not voltage under motor load. Aged Ni-Cd cells develop high internal resistance, so voltage sags the moment the motor draws current — suction drops while the indicator still looks fine. A replacement pack with fresh cells keeps load voltage above the ~12V the motor needs for full RPM. If suction loss is gradual across cleaning sessions rather than sudden, this is the cause.

The DustBuster motor shuts off for a few seconds and then starts again — is this a motor fault?

It is not the motor — it is the BMS tripping on overcurrent. A partially blocked filter forces the motor to work harder, drawing more current than the pack's protection circuit allows. The BMS cuts power, waits a few seconds, then resets. Remove and tap out the filter, then test again. If the cutout stops, the filter was the cause; if it continues on a clean filter, the existing cells have degraded to the point where internal resistance is pushing apparent draw over the trip threshold.

The replacement battery on my CHV1510 runs noticeably shorter than the original did when it was new — what's wrong?

Ni-Cd cells need conditioning after sitting in storage. A pack shipped from a warehouse has partially self-discharged and the cells are not yet balanced. Run three full charge-discharge cycles — charge fully on the dock, use the vacuum until suction noticeably weakens, then recharge. After the third cycle, capacity stabilises at the rated 2000mAh. If runtime is still noticeably short after conditioning, verify the filter is fully clear — a restricted filter increases motor current draw and burns through charge faster than rated.
