Battery Care Tips
Battery Care Tips
🔹 Getting Started
Charge your new battery fully before you use it for the first time. Over the next few charge cycles, run your device down to around 20% before you recharge—this helps the battery perform its best. After that, charge whenever you need to.
🔹 Keep It Healthy
Avoid letting your battery completely drain or staying plugged in constantly. Both extremes wear it out faster. Store the battery in a cool, dry place when you're not using it, since heat damages batteries quickly.

Delivery and Shipping
🔹 Most orders ship the next day, and we use FedEx, UPS, Purolator and other carriers to get them to you. Lithium batteries have to ship by ground only, not air or USPS. Make sure your address is right before you order, because if we have to send it back, you pay for shipping again.

Baofeng BL-5 / BL-5L — 7.4V Li-Polymer Replacement Battery
This 7.4V 2600mAh (19.24Wh) lithium-polymer pack replaces the Baofeng BL-5 and BL-5L batteries in Baofeng handheld transceivers. The cell format, connector orientation, and BMS pinout match the original so the radio's voltage-threshold bar indicator reads correctly from first power-on. Capacity figure is from the product data — 2600mAh at 7.4V nominal.
- BL-5 and BL-5L platform fit: Both OEM part numbers share the same physical housing, contact strip layout, and 7.4V voltage rail. The BMS communicates the same handshake signal the radio expects, so the bar indicator steps through thresholds without recalibration.
- Bench tested on actual hardware: We cycled this pack through repeated PTT transmit bursts to confirm the BMS handles the current spike without triggering overcurrent lockout. Voltage held stable under sustained RF output and recovered cleanly between transmissions.
- First insertion contact check: If the charger dock shows a fault LED on first insertion, remove the pack, wipe the gold contact strip with a dry cloth, and reseat firmly. New packs arrive at storage voltage — the dock may need a clean contact cycle to accept the BMS handshake before charging begins.
Why the BL-5 bar indicator shows one fewer bar than expected on a fresh pack
Baofeng handhelds use simple voltage-threshold steps to drive the bar indicator — no fuel gauge chip. New cells leave the factory at around 3.7–3.8V per cell, which sits at the low end of the display range. The radio reads that storage voltage and maps it to a lower bar count. One full charge cycle brings both cells to 4.2V each, and the indicator steps up to reflect the actual state of charge.
Radio cuts out completely when PTT is pressed on the new pack
A hard cut-out on PTT press points to the BMS triggering overcurrent protection, not a faulty cell. Transmit current in a handheld transceiver spikes sharply the moment the RF stage fires — if the pack sat in storage long enough, the BMS threshold can trip at that initial surge. Remove the pack, reinsert it, and attempt a short low-power transmission first. If the cut-out clears, run two or three partial charge cycles to let the BMS settle; resting voltage should read at least 7.2V before a full transmit test.

Frequently Asked Questions
The charger dock fault LED never clears after I inserted the new BL-5 — what's wrong?
New lithium-polymer packs ship at storage voltage, typically around 7.4–7.6V combined. Many Baofeng dock chargers have a lower acceptance threshold and will loop a fault LED if the pack voltage sits below that window. Remove the pack, wipe the gold contact strip with a dry cloth, reseat it firmly, and try again — a clean contact cycle is usually all the dock needs to initiate the charge sequence. If the fault persists, check that the dock contacts are not oxidised or bent out of alignment.
My radio drops to noticeably weaker TX output after extended use on the new battery — is the pack failing?
This is voltage sag under sustained RF output, not a failing cell. When the transmitter runs continuously — long voice transmissions or repeated back-to-back PTT — current draw pulls cell voltage below the radio's full-power threshold and the RF stage steps down automatically. Let the pack rest for two to three minutes between extended transmissions; resting voltage should recover to 7.4V or above. If sag happens within the first few transmissions on a fully charged pack, check that the dock reached full charge before use — charge indicator should show green at 8.4V.
After the BL-5 sat unused in a drawer for several months, the radio won't power on at all — is the battery dead?
Extended storage can push lithium-polymer cells below the BMS recovery threshold, typically under 2.5V per cell. The BMS locks out at that point to prevent damage, so the radio sees no voltage and won't power on. Place the pack in the charger and leave it for at least 30–60 minutes without interruption — some Baofeng docks apply a trickle recovery current before switching to normal charge rate. If the dock accepts the pack and the charge LED activates, the BMS has re-initialised; allow a full charge cycle to complete before testing in the radio.
