Battery Care Tips
Battery Care Tips
🔹 Getting Started
Charge your new battery fully before you use it for the first time. Over the next few charge cycles, run your device down to around 20% before you recharge—this helps the battery perform its best. After that, charge whenever you need to.
🔹 Keep It Healthy
Avoid letting your battery completely drain or staying plugged in constantly. Both extremes wear it out faster. Store the battery in a cool, dry place when you're not using it, since heat damages batteries quickly.

Delivery and Shipping
🔹 Most orders ship the next day, and we use FedEx, UPS, Purolator and other carriers to get them to you. Lithium batteries have to ship by ground only, not air or USPS. Make sure your address is right before you order, because if we have to send it back, you pay for shipping again.

Vertex Standard EVX-C31 / VZ-30 Series — 7.4V Li-ion Replacement Battery (FNB-Z181Li)
The FNB-Z181Li is a 7.4V, 1800mAh Li-ion battery for the Vertex Standard EVX-C31, VZ-30, VZ-30-G6-4, and VZ-30-D0-5 two-way radios. It slots into the same battery compartment as the original and connects through the same contact strip. Capacity figure is 13.32Wh as rated.
- EVX-C31 and VZ-30 platform fit: These models share the same battery bay dimensions, three-pin contact layout, and BMS handshake protocol — which is why one pack covers all four variants. The radio reads cell voltage through those contacts to gate TX power levels.
- Bench tested on actual hardware: We cycled this pack through full charge and discharge on an EVX-C31 dock. The BMS held voltage within spec under simulated PTT load, and the dock advanced from charge to ready without fault codes.
- First-insertion contact check on the VZ-30 dock: If the dock shows a fault LED on first insertion, pull the battery and wipe the gold contact strip with a dry cloth before reseating. The VZ-30 dock requires a clean contact cycle to complete the BMS handshake before it begins charging.
Why the EVX-C31 drops to reduced TX power mid-shift on a new battery
A new Li-ion cell ships at storage voltage — typically 3.6–3.7V per cell, not full charge. Under sustained RF output, the radio's power control circuit detects voltage sag below its TX threshold and steps down transmit power automatically. This is normal behaviour from the radio's firmware, not a fault in the pack. Fully charge the battery before the first shift and the radio will hold rated TX power throughout the day.
Bar indicator showing one fewer bar than expected after fitting the FNB-Z181Li
The EVX-C31 uses simple voltage-threshold steps to drive the bar indicator — it does not read capacity directly from the cell. A pack at storage voltage sits just below the top threshold, so the radio displays one bar short of full even though the cell is not depleted. Put the battery through a full charge cycle until the dock shows ready, then reinsert it. The indicator will read correctly once cell voltage reaches 8.3–8.4V at the contacts.

Frequently Asked Questions
My EVX-C31 cuts out completely when I press PTT — new battery fitted, radio was working fine before
This is a BMS overcurrent trip, not a radio fault. The transmit current spike on PTT can exceed the BMS overcurrent threshold if the cell is cold or still at storage voltage. Charge the pack fully, let it reach room temperature, then test again. If the cutout continues, check that the contact strip is clean and seating flush — a high-resistance connection causes the same voltage drop that triggers the trip.
The VZ-30 dock has been blinking amber for two hours — pack is inserted correctly and the contacts look clean
A blinking amber fault usually means the pack arrived below the dock's acceptance voltage threshold. Some chargers will not begin a charge cycle if cell voltage is too low. Remove the pack, leave it at room temperature for 20 minutes, then reinsert. If the dock still blinks, check the cell resting voltage with a multimeter at the contacts — it should read at least 6.0V for the dock to accept the pack and begin charging.
Radio ran fine all morning, then suddenly dropped to a whisper on TX — battery still shows two bars
This is voltage sag under sustained RF output, not a capacity failure. Under continuous or repeated PTT use, internal cell impedance causes voltage to dip below the radio's full-power TX threshold even when bars still show. The bar indicator samples voltage at rest between transmissions, so it can show two bars while sag under load is pulling power down. Allow the radio a short rest period between transmissions and ensure the pack is fully charged before the shift — a rested, fully charged cell handles the TX load surge without sagging past the threshold.
