This happens because the device's charge IC applies a conservative capacity estimate on the first cycle with a new cell — the BMS has not yet learned the actual capacity curve of the replacement pack. The alarm threshold is calculated against an incomplete state-of-charge map, so it triggers early even when the cell is genuinely full. Run one complete charge-to-discharge-to-charge cycle before relying on the battery indicator. After that first full cycle, the BMS recalibrates and the alarm threshold aligns correctly.

It is not defective. The charge IC in Bolate devices applies a conservative termination limit on an unconditioned cell, capping the accepted charge slightly below the full 12.6V ceiling. This is intentional — it protects a new cell from overvoltage on its first cycle. Run the device through one full discharge, then recharge completely. On the second charge, the indicator should reach 100% and the resting voltage should land at 12.5–12.6V.

The device passed self-test but failed on the next startup after I removed and reinserted the battery — how do I clear this?

Removing and reinserting the pack mid-session resets the BMS state register, and the device treats the next boot as a first-time installation — triggering a fresh BMS verification cycle. If the cell voltage has dipped slightly since the last charge, that verification can fail. Charge the battery to full, then reinsert it and allow the complete boot and self-test sequence to finish without removing power. Do not interrupt the startup cycle — the fault clears automatically once the self-test runs to completion.
