Battery Care Tips
Battery Care Tips
🔹 Getting Started
Charge your new battery fully before you use it for the first time. Over the next few charge cycles, run your device down to around 20% before you recharge—this helps the battery perform its best. After that, charge whenever you need to.
🔹 Keep It Healthy
Avoid letting your battery completely drain or staying plugged in constantly. Both extremes wear it out faster. Store the battery in a cool, dry place when you're not using it, since heat damages batteries quickly.

Fresenius MCM400 / Argus 400 Series — 12V Ni-MH Replacement Battery (E-1520)
This is a 12V, 2000mAh Ni-MH replacement battery for the Fresenius MCM and MCM400 series infusion pumps, including the MCM400D and Argus 400. It replaces OEM part numbers E-1520, 120049, and BATT/110049. The battery restores portable operation to the pump when the original cell has degraded past the device's minimum threshold.
- MCM and Argus 400 platform compatibility: These models share the same 12V power rail, connector pinout, and BMS handshake protocol. A single cell design covers all variants in this pump family without any hardware modification.
- Bench tested on actual hardware: We cycled this cell through the MCM400 charge and self-test sequence. The BMS accepted the cell on the first cycle, logged no fault codes, and held charge within spec across five consecutive discharge runs.
- Post-installation self-test protocol: After fitting this battery, let the pump complete its full power-on self-test without interruption. The MCM runs a BMS verification routine at startup — cutting power mid-sequence causes a latching battery fault that will not clear until the next clean reboot from a fully charged state.
Why the MCM400 alarms low battery on a freshly charged replacement cell
The MCM400 BMS calibrates its charge thresholds against the internal resistance profile of the fitted cell. A new Ni-MH cell has a slightly higher internal resistance than a conditioned one, so the pump reads the new cell as below threshold even at full charge. This is not a fault with the battery — it resolves after one complete charge-discharge cycle. Run the pump from full charge to the low-battery cutoff point, then charge it fully again. After that cycle, the BMS recalibrates and the alarm clears.
Pump will not power on after battery sat in storage
Ni-MH cells self-discharge during storage. If the replacement cell has been sitting for several months, its voltage may have dropped below the MCM's BMS recovery threshold — typically around 10.5V for a 12V Ni-MH pack. The BMS will not attempt to charge a cell it reads as deeply discharged. Connect the pump to mains power and leave it on charge for at least 12 hours before attempting to power on. If the charge indicator does not respond within 30 minutes of connection, measure the battery pack voltage directly — anything below 9V requires a trickle pre-charge before the main charge IC will engage.

Frequently Asked Questions
The MCM400 shows a low battery alarm straight after I charged the new battery — is it faulty?
The MCM400 BMS reads internal resistance alongside voltage to determine charge state. A new Ni-MH cell has higher internal resistance than a conditioned one, so the pump flags it as low even when the cell is full. This clears after one complete charge-discharge cycle. Run the pump from full charge down to the low-battery cutoff, then recharge fully — after that cycle the BMS recalibrates and the alarm stops.
The pump shuts off unexpectedly during infusion after fitting the replacement battery — what's causing it?
New Ni-MH cells deliver slightly less stable current during the first several cycles while the chemistry stabilises. The MCM's load profile during active infusion can stress a new cell hard enough to trigger a BMS undervoltage cutoff if the cell hasn't been conditioned yet. This is most common in the first 5 to 10 cycles and resolves as the cell beds in. Do not use the pump for clinical infusion until you have completed at least one full charge-discharge conditioning cycle and confirmed the BMS self-test passes cleanly at startup.
The charge indicator on the MCM400 never reaches 100% on the first charge — should I be concerned?
The MCM's charge IC applies a conservative current limit when it detects a new or recently installed cell, which causes the indicator to stall short of 100% on the first charge. This is intentional — the charge controller is protecting against overcharge on an uncalibrated cell. Leave the pump on charge for a full uninterrupted cycle of at least 12 hours. On the second charge, the indicator should reach 100% normally. If it still stalls after two full charge cycles, check that the battery connector is fully seated and the contact pins are clean.
