Fits Icom IC-F52D, IC-F62D, and IC-M85 radios; replaces BP-290 and BP-294 battery packs.
7.4V and 3300mAh capacity sustains full UHF transmission power across extended field shifts without voltage sag.
Slide connector orients with gold contacts facing the radio; locking tab seats flush against the battery door.
We tested the BMS through five transmit cycles at full RF output; the pack held voltage regulation clean with no cutoff.
If the charger dock shows a fault LED on first insertion, remove the battery, wipe the gold contact strip with a dry cloth, and reseat firmly — the Icom platform requires a clean contact cycle to accept the new BMS handshake before charging begins.

Battery Care Tips

🔹 Getting Started

Charge your new battery fully before you use it for the first time. Over the next few charge cycles, run your device down to around 20% before you recharge—this helps the battery perform its best. After that, charge whenever you need to.

🔹 Keep It Healthy

Avoid letting your battery completely drain or staying plugged in constantly. Both extremes wear it out faster. Store the battery in a cool, dry place when you're not using it, since heat damages batteries quickly.

Delivery and Shipping

🔹 Most orders ship the next day, and we use FedEx, UPS, Purolator and other carriers to get them to you. Lithium batteries have to ship by ground only, not air or USPS. Make sure your address is right before you order, because if we have to send it back, you pay for shipping again.

Icom IC-F52D / IC-F62D / IC-M85 — 7.4V Li-ion Replacement Battery (BP-290 / BP-294)

This 7.4V, 3300mAh lithium-ion battery replaces the Icom BP-290 and BP-294 packs. It fits the IC-F52D, IC-F62D, and IC-M85 two-way radios. Voltage and form factor match the OEM spec — the pack seats and locks the same way as the original.

  • IC-F52D, IC-F62D, and IC-M85 compatibility: All three models share the same 7.4V rail, battery footprint, and BMS handshake protocol. One pack covers the full platform — no hardware modification needed.
  • Bench tested on actual hardware: We ran this pack through charge and transmit cycles on the IC-F52D. The BMS accepted the charger handshake on first insertion, held voltage under PTT load, and tripped protection correctly at the low-voltage cutoff threshold.
  • First insertion contact check: If the charger dock shows a fault LED after inserting a new pack, remove the battery and wipe the gold contact strip with a dry cloth before reseating. The Icom dock requires a clean contact cycle to complete the BMS handshake before it will begin charging.

IC-F52D transmit cutout on a new BP-290 pack

New lithium-ion cells ship at storage voltage — typically 3.6–3.7V per cell, not full charge. When you key up for the first time, the transmit current spike can pull the pack voltage below the BMS overcurrent threshold before a full charge cycle has run. The radio interprets this as a fault and cuts the RF output. A full charge cycle before first use brings both cells to 4.2V each and gives the BMS enough headroom to handle the PTT current draw without tripping.

Bar indicator showing one fewer bar than expected after fitting a new pack

The IC-F52D uses a voltage-threshold bar indicator — each bar maps to a voltage band, not a calculated capacity percentage. A new pack at storage voltage sits in a lower band than a fully charged one, so the radio correctly displays fewer bars. This is not a fault with the cell. Charge the pack fully in the Icom dock until the LED goes green, then reinsert — the bar display will read at the top of the scale at 8.4V across the pack.

Frequently Asked Questions

The IC-F52D cuts out every time I press PTT with the new battery — is the pack faulty?

This is a BMS overcurrent trip, not a bad cell. New packs arrive at storage voltage, and the transmit current spike on PTT pulls the pack below the BMS protection threshold before a full charge has run. Charge the pack completely in the Icom dock first — the LED must go green before first use. After a full charge, each cell sits at 4.2V and the BMS has enough headroom to handle the transmit surge without cutting out.

The charger dock shows a fault LED on the new BP-290 and never clears — what's happening?

A fault LED that never clears usually means the dock did not complete the BMS handshake on insertion. Remove the pack, wipe the gold contact strip on the battery with a dry cloth, and reseat it firmly until it clicks. If the pack has been in storage for an extended period and the cell voltage has dropped below the dock's acceptance threshold (typically under 6V for a 7.4V pack), the dock will refuse to charge — in that case, a compatible external charger with a recovery or boost mode can bring the pack back above the acceptance floor before returning it to the Icom dock.

The IC-F52D drops to reduced TX power partway through a shift on the new battery — why?

This is voltage sag under sustained RF output, not a capacity fault. Prolonged transmit cycles draw higher current than standby, and if the cell impedance is elevated — common in a pack that has not completed its first full charge cycle — voltage drops enough mid-transmission for the radio to step down output power to protect the circuit. Run two full charge-discharge cycles to condition the cells. After conditioning, check that the dock LED reaches green and the pack rests at 8.4V open-circuit before the shift starts.
