Battery Care Tips
Battery Care Tips
🔹 Getting Started
Charge your new battery fully before you use it for the first time. Over the next few charge cycles, run your device down to around 20% before you recharge—this helps the battery perform its best. After that, charge whenever you need to.
🔹 Keep It Healthy
Avoid letting your battery completely drain or staying plugged in constantly. Both extremes wear it out faster. Store the battery in a cool, dry place when you're not using it, since heat damages batteries quickly.

Delivery and Shipping
🔹 Most orders ship the next day, and we use FedEx, UPS, Purolator and other carriers to get them to you. Lithium batteries have to ship by ground only, not air or USPS. Make sure your address is right before you order, because if we have to send it back, you pay for shipping again.

Vertex Standard HX280S Series — 7.4V Li-ion Replacement Battery (FNB-V105Li)
This is a 7.4V, 1800mAh Li-ion replacement battery for the Vertex Standard HX280S, HX280, HX280E, and HX380 handheld transceivers. It replaces OEM part FNB-V105Li. The battery slots directly into the radio's battery compartment and communicates with the dock via the same contact configuration as the original pack.
- HX280S, HX280, HX280E, HX380 compatibility: These four models share the same battery bay dimensions, contact layout, and 7.4V voltage rail, which is why a single pack services all four. The BMS in this cell matches the charge-acceptance handshake the Vertex Standard dock expects at initial insertion.
- Bench tested on actual hardware: We ran this pack through charge cycles on the Vertex Standard dock and confirmed the BMS holds cutoff cleanly under transmit current spikes. The pack did not trigger overcurrent lockout during back-to-back PTT draws at full RF output.
- First insertion on the Vertex dock: If the dock LED shows a fault on first insertion, remove the battery and wipe the gold contact strip with a dry cloth before reseating. The Vertex Standard charging platform requires a clean contact cycle to register the new BMS handshake before it will begin charging.
Why the HX280S drops to reduced TX power mid-shift on a fresh battery
New Li-ion cells ship at storage voltage — typically 3.6–3.8V per cell, not full charge. At storage voltage, the pack cannot sustain the current demanded by sustained RF output, so the radio's power management steps down TX power to protect the final stage amplifier. This is not a faulty battery. A full charge cycle before the first shift brings both cells to 4.2V each, restoring full RF output headroom. The symptom disappears after one complete charge.
Bar indicator showing one fewer bar than expected after fitting the FNB-V105Li
The HX280S uses voltage-threshold bar indicators — each bar corresponds to a specific voltage band, not a fuel-gauge percentage. A new pack at storage voltage sits below the threshold for the top bar, so the display shows one bar low even though the cell is healthy. Charge the battery fully in the dock until the charge LED goes green. Once the pack reaches 8.4V at rest, the indicator will display the correct bar count on next power-on.

Frequently Asked Questions
My HX280S cuts out completely when I press PTT — is the new battery causing this?
This is a BMS overcurrent trip, not a faulty cell. The transmit current spike on the HX280S can exceed what the BMS allows if the pack is not fully charged — storage-voltage cells have higher internal resistance, which makes the spike look larger to the protection circuit. Charge the battery to full (dock LED green) before use. If cutouts continue after a full charge, wipe the contact strip and reseat the pack to rule out a resistive connection.
The dock shows a fault LED and never clears after I insert the new FNB-V105Li — what's wrong?
The Vertex Standard dock checks for a minimum pack voltage before it will accept a charge cycle. If this battery has sat in a warehouse at low storage voltage, the dock may read it as below the acceptance threshold and flag a fault. Remove the pack, wait 10 seconds, wipe the gold contacts with a dry cloth, and reseat firmly. If the fault persists, try a different dock — some older Vertex docks have a narrower acceptance window and need a brief external top-up to around 7.0V before they will begin a normal charge.
The HX380 charged fine overnight but the bar indicator drops faster than the old battery did — is this normal for a new pack?
Yes, for the first two to three cycles. New Li-ion cells have not yet gone through a full formation cycle, so their usable voltage range is slightly compressed. The bar indicator on the HX380 reads voltage thresholds, so a cell that hasn't been fully cycled will cross the lower threshold earlier than a broken-in pack. Run two full charge-and-discharge cycles — keying up through the shift until the radio warns low, then charging fully each time. Capacity stabilises after that, and the bar indicator will hold each level longer.
