Battery Care Tips

🔹 Getting Started

Charge your new battery fully before you use it for the first time. Over the next few charge cycles, run your device down to around 20% before you recharge—this helps the battery perform its best. After that, charge whenever you need to.

🔹 Keep It Healthy

Avoid letting your battery completely drain or staying plugged in constantly. Both extremes wear it out faster. Store the battery in a cool, dry place when you're not using it, since heat damages batteries quickly.

Delivery and Shipping

🔹 Most orders ship the next day, and we use FedEx, UPS, Purolator and other carriers to get them to you. Lithium batteries have to ship by ground only, not air or USPS. Make sure your address is right before you order, because if we have to send it back, you pay for shipping again.

Kenwood TK-2200 / TK-2202 Series — 7.2V Ni-MH Replacement Battery (KNB-29N / KNB-30N)

This is a 7.2V, 1800mAh Ni-MH battery for the Kenwood TK-2200, TK-2202, TK-2206, TK-2207, and over 86 compatible models. It replaces OEM part numbers including KNB-29N, KNB-30N, KNB-53N, and RAD0148. The pack slots directly into the radio's battery bay and communicates with the KSC-35 and KSC-31 charger docks.

  • TK-2200 series compatibility: These models share a common 7.2V Ni-MH voltage rail, the same battery bay footprint, and identical contact geometry. The BMS handshake protocol is consistent across the TK-2200, TK-2202, TK-2206, and TK-2207 platforms, which is why a single pack covers such a wide model range.
  • Bench tested on actual hardware: We cycled this pack through charge and discharge on the KSC-35 dock and monitored the BMS across PTT transmit events. The pack held 7.2V under sustained transmit load and the BMS did not trip on repeated key-ups.
  • First insertion into the KSC-35 dock: If the charger LED blinks fault on first insertion, remove the pack, wipe the gold contact strip with a dry cloth, and reseat firmly. The KSC-35 platform requires a clean contact cycle to accept the new BMS handshake before it will begin charging.

Why the TK-2200 cuts out mid-transmission on a new battery

PTT on the TK-2200 pulls a sharp current spike to drive the RF output stage. If the pack is at storage voltage — typically 6.8V to 7.0V — the BMS reads that spike as an overcurrent event and shuts the output down before the transmission completes. This is not a faulty pack. Running one full charge cycle on the KSC-35 brings the cells to nominal voltage and eliminates the BMS trip on transmit.

Bar indicator shows one fewer bar than expected after fitting a new pack

The TK-2200 uses voltage-threshold readings to drive its bar indicator — it is not a fuel gauge chip. A new pack shipped at storage voltage sits below the radio's top-bar threshold, so the display shows one or two bars even on a fresh cell. This is a voltage reading, not a capacity fault. Charge the pack fully on the KSC-35 and the indicator will step up to the correct level at full charge voltage.

Frequently Asked Questions

My TK-2200 drops to low TX power partway through a long shift — is this a battery problem or a radio fault?

This is voltage sag under sustained RF output. Ni-MH cells lose voltage gradually under continuous transmit load, and the TK-2200 steps down TX power when the supply voltage drops below its lower threshold rather than cutting out entirely. A degraded original pack hits that threshold early; a fresh 1800mAh pack holds the voltage rail higher for longer. Check resting voltage after a shift — if the pack reads below 6.6V at rest, the cells are spent and the pack needs replacing.

The KSC-35 dock has been on charge overnight but the LED never turns green — it just stays on amber. What's happening?

Amber-only with no transition to green usually means the dock has detected a cell impedance mismatch and is holding a trickle rather than terminating the charge cycle. This can happen when a new pack's cells are unevenly matched from storage. Remove the pack, let it rest for 10 minutes, then reseat and restart the charge. If the dock still won't go green after a second full cycle, measure pack voltage — it should read at least 7.5V on a completed Ni-MH charge; anything below that points to a cell not accepting charge in the pack.

After the radio sat unused for three months, the pack won't charge at all — the KSC-35 dock shows no LED activity.

Extended storage can push a Ni-MH pack below the dock's acceptance voltage threshold, causing the KSC-35 to see the pack as absent rather than discharged. Most KSC-series docks won't initiate a charge cycle below approximately 5.5V. Apply a short trickle from any compatible Ni-MH charger set to its lowest current setting for 15 to 20 minutes to bring the pack up to acceptance voltage, then transfer it to the KSC-35 — the dock should recognise the pack and start a normal charge cycle.
