Fits Line 6 JTV James Tyler Variax guitar; replaces BA12 and 98-034-0003 batteries.
7.4V lithium-ion cell at 2600mAh keeps the onboard tuning and modeling circuits stable during performance.
Connector slides into the battery compartment on the guitar body with positive contact terminal facing outward.
We tested the cell on a JTV unit; BMS accepted the pack on first insertion with no fault delay.
On cold rehearsal days, this lithium chemistry holds voltage stable at lower temperatures where alkaline cells sag significantly.

Battery Care Tips

🔹 Getting Started

Charge your new battery fully before you use it for the first time. Over the next few charge cycles, run your device down to around 20% before you recharge—this helps the battery perform its best. After that, charge whenever you need to.

🔹 Keep It Healthy

Avoid letting your battery completely drain or staying plugged in constantly. Both extremes wear it out faster. Store the battery in a cool, dry place when you're not using it, since heat damages batteries quickly.

Delivery and Shipping

🔹 Most orders ship the next day, and we use FedEx, UPS, Purolator and other carriers to get them to you. Lithium batteries have to ship by ground only, not air or USPS. Make sure your address is right before you order, because if we have to send it back, you pay for shipping again.

Line 6 JTV James Tyler Variax — 7.4V Li-ion Replacement Battery (BA12)

This is a 7.4V, 2600mAh Li-ion replacement for the BA12 battery used in Line 6 Variax modeling guitars. It fits the JTV James Tyler Variax, Variax Standard, Shuriken, and the broader Variax Guitars range. The battery powers all onboard electronics — the analog-to-digital conversion, model processing, and tuning system.

  • Variax platform compatibility: These guitars share a common 7.4V Li-ion power architecture across the JTV, Standard, and Shuriken lines. The battery interfaces with the same internal BMS and connector layout, so one cell spec covers the full platform.
  • Bench tested on actual hardware: We ran this battery through charge and discharge cycles on Variax hardware. The BMS accepted the cell without fault codes, and voltage held stable through modeling transitions — including switching between guitar models under active DSP load.
  • Variax battery contact care: The BA12 slides into the battery compartment via a contact plate. If the guitar intermittently loses power during play, check that the gold contacts on the cell are clean and free of oxidation — a dry cotton swab removes residue without damaging the surface.

Why the Variax drops its model mid-performance

The Variax's DSP draws a short current spike each time it switches guitar models or engages a tuning preset. An aging BA12 with elevated internal resistance can't supply that spike cleanly — voltage dips below the electronics threshold and the guitar resets or mutes. This isn't a firmware issue. The cell is no longer delivering the current the processor needs. A fresh 7.4V cell with low internal resistance eliminates the dropout entirely.

Variax powers on but tuning accuracy drifts after a few minutes

The Variax's pitch modeling relies on a stable voltage reference to maintain accurate intonation across alternate tunings. As a degraded cell sags under sustained load, that reference voltage shifts — and the guitar's tuning output drifts relative to standard pitch. This typically appears as sharp or flat inconsistencies that worsen the longer the guitar stays on. Replace the BA12 and confirm the fresh cell reads at least 7.2V under load before ruling out other causes.

Frequently Asked Questions

My Variax guitar cuts out or resets every time I switch between guitar models — is the battery causing this?

Yes, model switching triggers a short DSP current spike that a degraded BA12 can no longer supply cleanly. The internal resistance of an old cell is high enough that voltage sags below the electronics threshold during that spike, causing a reset or mute. This isn't a firmware or software fault — it's the cell failing under momentary high draw. Fit a fresh BA12 and test with a few rapid model switches to confirm.

The Variax powers on fine but the tuning drifts sharp or flat after a few minutes of playing — what's happening?

The pitch modeling system uses a stable voltage reference to calculate alternate tunings. As a worn cell sags under sustained DSP load, that reference voltage shifts and tuning output drifts off pitch. The longer the guitar runs, the worse the drift gets. Replace the BA12 and verify the fresh cell holds above 7.2V under sustained load.

My Variax loses power randomly even though the battery was charged recently — why won't it hold a session?

Li-ion cells that have been deep-discharged or stored depleted lose usable capacity even if they still accept a charge. The cell may report enough voltage to power on but collapse quickly once the DSP is under load. Check the resting voltage of the current cell — anything below 7.0V at rest means the cell is no longer viable. Fit a new BA12 and run a full charge cycle before your next session.
