The NCU-12 boot sequence includes a battery self-test that checks resting cell voltage before allowing full startup. A new Ni-MH cell sitting in storage can drop below the BMS recovery threshold through self-discharge, which causes the device to stall mid-boot rather than reaching the home screen. Charge the replacement cell fully before first installation — do not install it straight from the packaging. Once the cell reads at or above 13.2V on a resting charge, the boot sequence completes normally.

NCU-12 charge indicator not reaching 100% on first charge cycle

On the first charge after installation, the NCU-12 charge IC applies a conservative current limit to an unrecognised cell — this is normal behaviour for medical-grade charge controllers. The indicator may plateau at 85–95% and appear to stall. Do not pull the charger early. Allow the charge cycle to complete fully; the IC will push through the final top-up phase once it completes its cell recognition pass. After one full charge-discharge cycle, subsequent charges reach 100% at the expected rate.
