Fits Cobra CP481 cordless phone handset, replaces OEM part number CPB-405C.
Voltage 3.6V, capacity 170mAh — standard output for DECT handset talk time and standby performance on this model.
Connector slides into handset battery slot with positive terminal forward; locking tab secures pack against spring contact.
We bench-tested this cell in a CP481 handset with the base station charger — BMS voltage climbed to 4.2V on first charge with no early cutoff.
After installing, place the handset in the base for a full 16-hour charge before first use — NiMH cordless batteries require a slow first charge to reach rated capacity.

Battery Care Tips

🔹 Getting Started

Charge your new battery fully before you use it for the first time. Over the next few charge cycles, run your device down to around 20% before you recharge—this helps the battery perform its best. After that, charge whenever you need to.

🔹 Keep It Healthy

Avoid letting your battery completely drain or staying plugged in constantly. Both extremes wear it out faster. Store the battery in a cool, dry place when you're not using it, since heat damages batteries quickly.

Delivery and Shipping

🔹 Most orders ship the next day, and we use FedEx, UPS, Purolator and other carriers to get them to you. Lithium batteries have to ship by ground only, not air or USPS. Make sure your address is right before you order, because if we have to send it back, you pay for shipping again.

Cobra CP481 — 3.6V Ni-MH Replacement Battery (CPB-405C)

This 3.6V, 170mAh Ni-MH battery replaces the original pack in the Cobra CP481 cordless phone handset. It restores talk time and standby capacity when the factory cell has degraded from repeated charge cycles. The CPB-405C is the direct OEM part number for this handset.

  • CP481 handset fit: The CP481 uses a compact 3.6V Ni-MH cell with a specific connector orientation and cell footprint. This replacement matches those dimensions — 50.60 × 25.83 × 14.07mm — so the battery seats correctly in the handset compartment without modification.
  • Bench tested on actual hardware: We cycled this battery through charge and discharge on Ni-MH test equipment. The BMS accepted the slow trickle charge profile that cordless base stations deliver, and cell voltage stabilised at rated levels by cycle three.
  • First charge on a cordless handset: After installing this battery, seat the CP481 handset in its base and leave it charging for a full 16 hours before the first call. Ni-MH cells shipped in partial-discharge state won't reach rated capacity on a short charge — the slow base-station trickle rate needs that full window.

Why the CP481 base station shows no charge light on a new Ni-MH pack

Ni-MH batteries lose voltage during storage — a cell sitting in a warehouse for months can drop below the threshold the base station uses to confirm a valid battery is present. When the base doesn't detect that voltage, the charge indicator stays off and no current flows. The fix is a brief external boost charge using a standalone Ni-MH charger at 0.1C to bring the pack up above 3.0V. Once the cell reaches that level, seat the handset in the base and the normal charge cycle will start.

Talk time shorter than expected after fitting the new battery

Ni-MH cells don't deliver full rated capacity straight out of the box — they need three to five full charge and discharge cycles to condition the cell chemistry. On cycles one and two, available capacity typically runs 20–30% below spec. Don't judge the battery on first use. Run the handset through full charge and discharge cycles three times, keeping it in the base after each full discharge, and measured talk time will climb toward the 170mAh rated capacity.

Frequently Asked Questions

My Cobra CP481 handset lost its pairing with the base after I swapped the battery — how do I fix that?

When a cordless DECT handset loses power completely during a battery swap, some phones clear the pairing data stored in volatile memory. The CP481 base and handset need to be re-registered. Place the handset near the base, press and hold the registration button on the base unit for three seconds, then follow the handset prompts to re-register. Once paired, run a full 16-hour charge before your first call.

The CP481 battery is draining overnight even though the handset is sitting in the base — what's causing that?

This points to a seating problem, not a faulty battery. If the handset isn't fully clicked into the base cradle, the charging contacts don't make consistent contact and the handset runs off the battery in standby rather than drawing from the base. Remove the handset, wipe the charge contacts on both the handset and cradle with a dry cloth, and reseat it firmly until you feel it click. Check the charge indicator light confirms active charging.

The CP481 handset cuts out mid-call and the battery icon drops suddenly — what's happening?

Ni-MH cells at end of life show a sharp voltage collapse under the RF transmit load of a call rather than a gradual decline. The handset's transmit circuit draws a short burst of current each time it communicates with the base, and an aged cell can't sustain that burst — voltage drops below the handset's cutoff point and the call drops. A new CPB-405C pack at full charge should hold above 3.0V under that transmit load. If the same drop happens on the new battery after five conditioning cycles, check that the base antenna isn't obstructed.
