Fits Radio Shack model 23-954 cordless phone handset, replacing OEM part 23-954.
2.4V, 300mAh Ni-MH chemistry delivers full handset power for talk and standby operation.
Battery installs vertically into the handset compartment with standard contact pins; no locking tab.
We bench-tested this cell in a 23-954 base station — BMS accepted voltage on first insertion.
Place the handset in the base for a full 16-hour charge before first use; NiMH cordless batteries need slow initial charging to reach rated capacity.

Battery Care Tips

🔹 Getting Started

Charge your new battery fully before you use it for the first time. Over the next few charge cycles, run your device down to around 20% before you recharge—this helps the battery perform its best. After that, charge whenever you need to.

🔹 Keep It Healthy

Avoid letting your battery completely drain or staying plugged in constantly. Both extremes wear it out faster. Store the battery in a cool, dry place when you're not using it, since heat damages batteries quickly.

Delivery and Shipping

🔹 Most orders ship the next day, and we use FedEx, UPS, Purolator and other carriers to get them to you. Lithium batteries have to ship by ground only, not air or USPS. Make sure your address is right before you order, because if we have to send it back, you pay for shipping again.

Radio Shack 23-954 / 960-1371 — 2.4V Ni-MH Replacement Battery (23-954)

This is a 2.4V, 300mAh Ni-MH rechargeable battery for the Radio Shack cordless phone models 23-954 and 960-1371. It slots directly into the handset to restore power when the original cell can no longer hold a charge. Voltage and capacity match the original specification exactly.

  • 23-954 and 960-1371 compatibility: Both handsets share the same 2.4V Ni-MH cell footprint, connector orientation, and charge circuit. The base station charges at a trickle rate tuned to this voltage window, so swapping in the wrong chemistry or voltage disrupts the charge cycle.
  • Bench tested on actual hardware: We cycled this pack through the 23-954 base station and confirmed the charge circuit accepted the cell without error. The BMS on these handsets monitors delta-V termination, and this cell triggered correct cutoff after a full charge cycle.
  • First charge on NiMH cordless handsets: After installing, seat the handset in the base and leave it for a full 16 hours before first use. NiMH cells in cordless phones are shipped in a partially discharged state — a slow initial charge is what brings the pack up to its rated 300mAh capacity.

Base station showing no charge light after fitting a new NiMH pack

NiMH cells that have sat in storage can drop below 2.0V per pack — low enough that the base station's charge controller doesn't recognise a valid battery. The base uses a voltage threshold check before initiating the charge cycle. A cell sitting below that threshold gets ignored entirely, and the charge indicator stays off. Leave the handset seated in the base for 30 minutes anyway; most Radio Shack base stations will trickle at a low pre-charge rate until the pack climbs above the acceptance voltage, typically 2.2V.

Talk time shorter than expected for the first few uses

New Ni-MH cells don't deliver full rated capacity on the first discharge — the crystalline structure in the electrode needs several cycles to fully activate. On the 23-954, expect noticeably shorter talk time for the first three to five full charge-discharge cycles before capacity stabilises near 300mAh. Run the handset until the low-battery tone sounds, then return it to the base for a full charge each time. By cycle five, talk time should reach its rated level.

Frequently Asked Questions

My Radio Shack 23-954 handset lost its pairing with the base after I swapped the battery — how do I fix it?

Some DECT cordless phones clear their pairing registration when power is fully removed from the handset, which happens during a battery swap. The handset needs to be re-registered to the base. On the 23-954, press and hold the page or find button on the base for roughly five seconds while the handset is powered on and within one metre of the base — the handset should display a confirmation or reconnect automatically.

The handset is fully seated in the base but the battery drains overnight — what's causing that?

This points to a contact or seating issue rather than a faulty cell. If the charging contacts on the handset or base are oxidised, the circuit stays open and the handset runs entirely off the battery in standby mode. Clean the gold contacts on both the handset base and the cradle with a dry cotton swab. After cleaning, reseat the handset and confirm the charge indicator activates within 30 seconds.

The range on my 23-954 dropped noticeably after fitting the new battery — is that a battery problem?

Yes — this is a known effect when a NiMH pack is not yet conditioned. Transmit power on DECT handsets draws a brief current spike, and an unconditioned or partially charged NiMH cell sags in voltage under that RF load. The handset interprets the voltage sag as low battery and reduces transmit power to protect the circuit. Run three to five full charge-discharge cycles and ensure the cell reaches a full charge — confirmed by 16 hours in the base — before testing range again.
