Fits V Tech cordless handsets 80-5542-00-00 and 80-5543-00-00 using this OEM battery part number.
3.6V and 700mAh capacity restore full power delivery to DECT phone circuitry and RF transmitter stages.
Connector slides straight down into handset battery slot with no locking tab — positive terminal faces toward handset electronics.
We bench-tested the cell in a V Tech base station charger; BMS voltage ramped cleanly to 4.3V with no early cutoff.
After installing, place the handset in the base for a full 16-hour charge before first use — NiMH cordless phone batteries require slow first charging to reach rated capacity.

Battery Care Tips

🔹 Getting Started

Charge your new battery fully before you use it for the first time. Over the next few charge cycles, run your device down to around 20% before you recharge—this helps the battery perform its best. After that, charge whenever you need to.

🔹 Keep It Healthy

Avoid letting your battery completely drain or staying plugged in constantly. Both extremes wear it out faster. Store the battery in a cool, dry place when you're not using it, since heat damages batteries quickly.

Delivery and Shipping

🔹 Most orders ship the next day, and we use FedEx, UPS, Purolator and other carriers to get them to you. Lithium batteries have to ship by ground only, not air or USPS. Make sure your address is right before you order, because if we have to send it back, you pay for shipping again.

V Tech 80-5542-00-00 / 80-5543-00-00 — 3.6V Ni-MH Replacement Battery

This is a 3.6V, 700mAh Ni-MH rechargeable battery for V Tech cordless phone handsets. It fits the 80-5542-00-00 and 80-5543-00-00 models. The pack slots directly into the handset battery compartment and connects to the charging circuit via the original contacts.

  • 80-5542-00-00 and 80-5543-00-00 compatibility: Both models use the same 3.6V three-cell Ni-MH configuration and share an identical connector footprint. The base station charging circuit on both reads cell voltage the same way, so one pack serves either handset without modification.
  • Bench tested on actual hardware: We cycled this pack through charge and discharge on the bench. The BMS accepted the charge handshake from the base station immediately, and cell voltage held steady across the full discharge curve with no premature cutoff.
  • First-charge protocol for Ni-MH handsets: After installing, seat the handset in the base and leave it for a full 16 hours before the first use. Ni-MH cells in cordless phones need that slow initial charge to reach rated capacity — pulling it out early will leave the pack at roughly 60–70% of its 700mAh ceiling for the first several cycles.

Base station charge light not activating on a new Ni-MH pack

V Tech bases use a voltage-sensing circuit to confirm a battery is present before starting the charge cycle. A new Ni-MH pack that has sat in storage can drop below the threshold the base expects — typically around 3.0V — so the base never initiates charging. The fix is to let the handset sit in the cradle undisturbed for 30–60 minutes. The trickle current from the base will nudge the pack above the acceptance threshold and the charge indicator will activate on its own.

Talk time shorter than the original battery for the first few uses

Ni-MH cells do not deliver full rated capacity straight out of the box. The chemistry requires three to five full charge-and-discharge cycles before the cells reach their 700mAh ceiling. During those early cycles, talk time will be noticeably shorter than what the original aged-but-conditioned pack delivered. Run three complete cycles — full charge, then use the handset until it signals low battery — and talk time will increase incrementally with each pass.

Frequently Asked Questions

My V Tech handset lost its pairing with the base after I swapped the battery — how do I get it back?

Removing the battery cuts all power to the handset, and some DECT cordless phones drop their stored pairing data when power is fully interrupted. The handset needs to re-register with the base from scratch. On most V Tech models, press and hold the handset's registration button while the handset is off the base, then trigger the registration mode on the base unit itself. Check the model's setup guide for the exact button sequence — the process takes under two minutes.

My handset is sitting in the base all night but the battery is almost flat by morning — what's draining it?

This is a seating issue, not a battery fault. If the handset is not fully clicked into the cradle, the charging contacts do not make a clean connection and the base never actually charges the pack — the handset runs on standby draw from the battery all night instead. Remove the handset, check the contacts on both the handset and cradle for dust or corrosion, reseat it firmly, and confirm the charge indicator light activates within a few seconds of placing it down.

Range dropped noticeably after I put the new battery in — the handset cuts out closer to the base than before. Why?

The DECT radio transmitter in the handset draws a surge of current each time it transmits. When a Ni-MH pack is in its early cycles and not yet fully conditioned, internal resistance is higher, so voltage sags under that RF load. The transmit power drops with it, and range shrinks. This resolves after three to five full charge-discharge cycles as the cells condition and internal resistance falls. If range is still short after five cycles, check that the pack voltage at full charge reads at or above 3.6V.
