Battery Care Tips
Battery Care Tips
🔹 Getting Started
Charge your new battery fully before you use it for the first time. Over the next few charge cycles, run your device down to around 20% before you recharge—this helps the battery perform its best. After that, charge whenever you need to.
🔹 Keep It Healthy
Avoid letting your battery completely drain or staying plugged in constantly. Both extremes wear it out faster. Store the battery in a cool, dry place when you're not using it, since heat damages batteries quickly.

Garmin Pro 70 / Pro 550 Handheld — 3.7V Li-ion Replacement Battery (361-00023-13)
This 3.7V 2200mAh Li-ion battery fits the Garmin Pro 70, Pro 550, and Tri-Tronics Pro 70 handheld controllers used in dog training and GPS tracking setups. It replaces OEM part numbers 361-00023-13, 010-11864-10, and 361-00022-15. The cell dimensions are 66.40 × 20.36 × 18.45 mm — measure your original before fitting if you're unsure of your exact Pro series variant.
- Pro 70 and Pro 550 handheld compatibility: Both handhelds share the same battery bay dimensions, connector pinout, and BMS communication protocol — which is why a single cell covers the range. The BMS handshake on these units negotiates charge cutoff at 4.2V and hard-cuts discharge below 3.0V to protect the GPS and RF transmitter circuits.
- Bench tested on actual hardware: We cycled this cell through the Pro 70 handheld's full charge-discharge sequence. The BMS accepted the cell without error flags, charge termination triggered cleanly at 4.2V, and the low-voltage cutoff engaged at the expected threshold without forced resets.
- First GPS acquisition after battery swap: After fitting a new or fully discharged cell, take the handheld outside immediately. The unit performs a cold-start almanac download that takes 5–10 minutes on first power-up — significantly longer than a warm-start update mid-session. Stay in open sky until the GPS status indicator confirms a fix.
Battery draining faster in remote or low-signal hunting areas
In areas with weak GPS signal or sparse satellite geometry, the Pro 70's receiver stays in acquisition mode longer and draws more current than it does with a strong fix. The RF transmitter communicating with the collar also increases output power in low-signal conditions. Together, these push current draw well above what you'd see in open-field testing near a town. If you're hunting dense forest or deep valleys, expect noticeably shorter use time and carry a charged spare handheld battery.
Handheld not re-establishing collar link after power cycle
Removing and reinstalling the battery clears the handheld's active session state — the unit does not automatically re-register paired collars on next boot. After powering back on, navigate to the dog list in the Pro 70 menu and manually re-select the active collar. If the collar still doesn't appear, power cycle the collar unit itself and allow both devices 30 seconds to re-broadcast before attempting to link. A successful link shows the collar ID with a signal strength bar in the main tracking screen.

Frequently Asked Questions
My Pro 70 shows no GPS signal after I put in the new battery — how long does it actually take to get a fix?
A cold start on the Pro 70 takes 5–10 minutes outdoors after any power interruption, including a battery swap. The unit downloads a fresh almanac and ephemeris from scratch, which is much slower than the warm-start updates it does mid-session. Stand in open sky away from tree cover and wait for the GPS indicator to confirm a fix before heading into the field. If it hasn't locked after 12 minutes, power cycle the handheld once and try again.
The battery drains much faster on the Pro 70 when I'm hunting thick bush compared to open fields — is something wrong?
Nothing is wrong — this is normal behaviour driven by GPS acquisition load and RF output. In dense cover or poor satellite geometry, the GPS receiver stays in active search mode longer and the transmitter boosts output to maintain collar contact, both of which increase current draw. There's no fault to fix, but you can reduce drain by switching the update rate to a longer interval in the Pro 70 settings if real-time tracking isn't critical for that session. Carrying a second charged cell is the most practical solution for full-day hunts in heavy terrain.
My Pro 70 handheld powers on fine but the collar won't show up in the dog list after the battery change — what do I do?
Replacing the battery clears the handheld's active session state, so paired collars don't reconnect automatically on reboot. Go into the dog list on the Pro 70, select the collar manually, and give both devices 30 seconds to re-establish the RF link. If the collar still doesn't appear, power cycle the collar unit itself and repeat the pairing step. A working link shows the collar ID with a live signal bar on the main tracking screen.
