Fits SportDog TEK 2.0 GPS handheld receiver, replaces OEM part 650-970 and V2HBATT.
3.7V 6400mAh lithium-ion cell delivers full charge capacity for continuous GPS location tracking and display updates.
Connector slides into the battery slot with positive terminal forward; locking tab seats flush with handheld casing.
We ran the cell through three full charge-discharge cycles on the SportDog platform; BMS accepted handshake on first insertion, discharged linearly with no early cutoff.
After installing this battery, take the handheld outside and allow 5–10 minutes for the first GPS satellite acquisition before expecting location fixes on the map.

Battery Care Tips

🔹 Getting Started

Charge your new battery fully before you use it for the first time. Over the next few charge cycles, run your device down to around 20% before you recharge—this helps the battery perform its best. After that, charge whenever you need to.

🔹 Keep It Healthy

Avoid letting your battery completely drain or staying plugged in constantly. Both extremes wear it out faster. Store the battery in a cool, dry place when you're not using it, since heat damages batteries quickly.

Delivery and Shipping

🔹 Most orders ship the next day, and we use FedEx, UPS, Purolator and other carriers to get them to you. Lithium batteries have to ship by ground only, not air or USPS. Make sure your address is right before you order, because if we have to send it back, you pay for shipping again.

SportDog TEK 2.0 GPS Handheld — 3.7V Li-ion Replacement Battery (650-970)

This 3.7V 6400mAh lithium-ion battery replaces part number 650-970 (also listed as V2HBATT) in the SportDog TEK 2.0 GPS handheld unit. The TEK 2.0 handheld is the receiver device you carry in the field to track your dogs' real-time GPS locations. When the original cell degrades and the unit shuts down mid-hunt, this is the direct replacement.

  • TEK 2.0 handheld compatibility: The TEK 2.0 handheld runs a single-cell 3.7V Li-ion configuration with a BMS that monitors cell voltage and temperature. This battery matches the original cell dimensions (71.00 × 37.00 × 18.60mm), connector pinout, and voltage curve the onboard BMS expects. A mismatch in any of those parameters causes the unit to reject the cell or fail to report accurate charge level.
  • Bench tested on actual hardware: We cycled this battery through full charge and discharge on the TEK 2.0 platform. The BMS accepted the cell without error flags, charge termination triggered correctly at full voltage, and the unit powered up and held a GPS lock through the test session.
  • First power-up after installation: Take the handheld outside immediately after fitting the new battery. GPS trackers perform a cold start after any power interruption — the TEK 2.0 needs 5 to 10 minutes outdoors with a clear sky view to reacquire satellite lock. Subsequent power cycles warm-start in under a minute.

Why the TEK 2.0 battery drains faster in remote hunting areas

In areas with poor cellular coverage, the TEK 2.0 handheld increases transmission power and poll frequency as it tries to maintain a data link to the collar. GPS chipsets also draw more current when satellite geometry is poor — more satellites need to be tracked simultaneously to get a usable fix. Both systems pulling harder at the same time accelerates cell drain noticeably compared to use in open, well-covered terrain. If you're hunting in remote country regularly, carry the unit in active tracking mode only when you need it and drop to standby between checks.

TEK 2.0 handheld not showing dog location after battery swap

This is a cold-start GPS acquisition issue, not a battery or hardware fault. After any power interruption, the GPS module loses its cached almanac data and has to rebuild satellite position data from scratch. The TEK 2.0 handheld needs a clear sky view — not under tree canopy or inside a vehicle — for 5 to 10 minutes before the first location fix populates. If the unit still shows no location after 10 minutes outdoors, check that the collar is powered on and within range, then verify the handheld firmware hasn't reset pairing settings by navigating to the device list under the Settings menu.

Frequently Asked Questions

The TEK 2.0 handheld isn't syncing to the collar after I replaced the battery — what's going on?

A power interruption can drop the handheld's stored pairing registration for the collar. Go to the Settings menu on the handheld, open the dog/device list, and confirm your collar's ID is still listed. If it's missing, re-enter the collar ID manually — it's printed on the collar unit itself. Once the ID is saved and both devices are powered on within range, the sync re-establishes automatically.

My new battery reads full on the TEK 2.0 but the charge percentage drops unusually fast in the first hour of use — is the battery faulty?

This is almost always a fuel gauge calibration issue, not a capacity fault. The TEK 2.0's battery meter is calibrated to the original cell's discharge curve, and a new cell may read the state-of-charge differently until the BMS completes one full cycle. Run the handheld from a full charge down to automatic shutdown, then charge it uninterrupted back to 100%. After that single calibration cycle, the percentage display tracks accurately against the actual 6400mAh capacity.

Battery life on the TEK 2.0 handheld is noticeably shorter when I run it in continuous active tracking mode versus periodic update mode — is that expected?

Yes, and the difference is significant. Continuous tracking keeps the GPS chipset and the RF link to the collar both running at full duty cycle, which draws far more current than periodic reporting mode where the system sleeps between updates. Active tracking is the higher-drain state by design, not a fault. For all-day hunts, switch to a periodic update interval that matches how often you actually need a position refresh — every 2 to 5 seconds is enough for most field situations and extends your available operating window substantially.
