Battery Care Tips

🔹 Getting Started

Charge your new battery fully before you use it for the first time. Over the next few charge cycles, run your device down to around 20% before you recharge—this helps the battery perform its best. After that, charge whenever you need to.

🔹 Keep It Healthy

Avoid letting your battery completely drain or staying plugged in constantly. Both extremes wear it out faster. Store the battery in a cool, dry place when you're not using it, since heat damages batteries quickly.

Delivery and Shipping

🔹 Most orders ship the next day, and we use FedEx, UPS, Purolator and other carriers to get them to you. Lithium batteries have to ship by ground only, not air or USPS. Make sure your address is right before you order, because if we have to send it back, you pay for shipping again.

BIG BEAM ECHL1RWW / ECHL2RWW Series — 7.2V Ni-CD Replacement Battery (N71F)

This is a 7.2V, 800mAh nickel-cadmium replacement battery for BIG BEAM emergency lighting units. It fits the ECHL1RWW, ECHL2RWW, ERXL1WGCS, ERXL1WRCR, and compatible models in the same family. The OEM part number is N71F, also cross-referenced as 3YAJ7, 118-0017, and OSA026.

  • Multi-model compatibility: These BIG BEAM fixtures share the same 7.2V battery rail, connector pinout, and charge controller logic across the ECHL and ERXL sub-families. A single cell type works across all of them because the trickle charge circuit is calibrated to the same float voltage and capacity class.
  • Bench tested on actual hardware: We ran this cell through a full charge-discharge cycle on the BIG BEAM charge circuit. The BMS accepted the cell without fault, held float charge correctly, and the load test confirmed the cell delivers current at the rated 800mAh capacity.
  • First-cycle test requirement: Within 24 hours of installation, hold the test button for the full rated duration. This lets the charge controller register the new cell's capacity and clears any residual fault state before your next scheduled compliance inspection.

Emergency light failing its duration test after battery replacement

A freshly installed Ni-CD cell is rarely at full capacity out of the box. Storage discharge means the cell may hold only a fraction of its 800mAh rating on first activation. The BIG BEAM charge controller needs one complete charge cycle — typically 24 hours on mains — before the cell reaches rated capacity. Run the duration test only after that first full charge, not immediately after fitting the new battery.

Charge indicator staying red after new battery installation

The charge indicator stays red when the controller detects cell voltage outside its float acceptance window. A battery shipped at low storage voltage will read below the expected threshold, triggering a fault state. Give the unit a full 24-hour charge on mains power — the controller will re-enter float mode and shift the indicator to green once voltage climbs into range. If the light stays red beyond 30 hours, check the cell seating and connector contact before assuming a controller fault.

Frequently Asked Questions

The emergency light dims noticeably after a couple of minutes during the test — is the new battery faulty?

The cell is not faulty — it is under-charged. Ni-CD cells shipped in storage discharge state may hold well under half their rated 800mAh on first use, causing the light to drop output quickly under load. Place the unit back on mains power for a full 24-hour conditioning charge, then rerun the test. That single cycle is usually enough to bring the cell to full rated capacity.

The fitting still shows a fault LED even though the new battery is seated correctly and the connector is secure — what is causing this?

Some BIG BEAM fittings latch the fault LED in hardware and will not self-clear after a new cell is installed. The controller needs to complete a full charge cycle before it re-evaluates cell status. Leave the unit on mains for 24 hours, then press and hold the test button for three seconds to force a manual reset of the fault indicator. If the LED clears and the unit passes the duration test, the fitting is working correctly.

The old battery looks swollen and the plastic casing is deformed — can I just swap in the new cell and leave it?

Swelling in a Ni-CD cell is a sign of overcharge damage, usually from years of continuous trickle charge at elevated ambient temperature inside the fitting. Before fitting the replacement, check the area around the charge contacts for corrosion or heat discolouration. If the contacts look burnt or pitted, clean them with isopropyl alcohol and a cotton swab before installing the new cell. Fitting a new battery into a faulty charge circuit will cause the same swelling to repeat.
