Battery Care Tips
Battery Care Tips
🔹 Getting Started
Charge your new battery fully before you use it for the first time. Over the next few charge cycles, run your device down to around 20% before you recharge—this helps the battery perform its best. After that, charge whenever you need to.
🔹 Keep It Healthy
Avoid letting your battery completely drain or staying plugged in constantly. Both extremes wear it out faster. Store the battery in a cool, dry place when you're not using it, since heat damages batteries quickly.

Delivery and Shipping
🔹 Most orders ship the next day, and we use FedEx, UPS, Purolator and other carriers to get them to you. Lithium batteries have to ship by ground only, not air or USPS. Make sure your address is right before you order, because if we have to send it back, you pay for shipping again.

Genlyte 52-0185 / 62-0185 / OSA060AA — 3.6V Ni-CD Replacement Battery
This is a 3.6V, 800mAh nickel-cadmium cell for Genlyte emergency lighting units fitted in commercial and industrial buildings. It fits the 52-0185, 62-0185, and OSA060AA models. When mains power fails, this battery activates the lamp circuit and holds the fitting operational for the rated duration.
- 52-0185, 62-0185, and OSA060AA compatibility: These three Genlyte models share the same 3.6V single-cell NiCd format, charge controller float voltage, and bayonet-style cell connector. Swapping between them does not change the installation procedure.
- Bench tested on actual hardware: We ran a full charge cycle on a 62-0185 fitting and confirmed the charge controller accepted the cell without fault. The BMS completed float transition within the expected window, and the lamp circuit fired correctly on a simulated mains-loss event.
- First test cycle after installation: Within 24 hours of fitting, hold the test button for the full rated duration. NiCd cells fresh from storage have not yet been conditioned — running one full discharge-to-cutoff cycle lets the charge controller register actual cell capacity before your next scheduled compliance test.
Charge indicator staying red after new battery installation
Genlyte charge controllers compare incoming cell voltage against a narrow float acceptance window. A cell shipped at storage voltage — typically 3.2–3.4V — can sit below that window and trigger a persistent red fault state. The controller has not failed; it is waiting for the cell to reach threshold before switching to green. Leave the fitting on mains power for 24 hours. If the indicator has not shifted to green by then, check terminal contact and confirm cell polarity is correctly oriented.
Emergency light dims and cuts short during a duration test
A cell that has not completed its first conditioning cycle delivers less usable capacity than its 800mAh rating suggests. The lamp draws full load, the cell voltage drops faster than expected, and the fitting cuts the lamp circuit early — failing the test on paper even though the cell is not defective. This is not a fault with the battery or the fitting. Run one full charge cycle on mains before the next compliance test. After that first cycle, rated capacity is available and the fitting should hold lamp output for the full duration.

Frequently Asked Questions
My Genlyte fitting still shows a fault LED after I've installed the new battery and checked the terminals — what's causing it?
Some Genlyte fittings latch the fault LED in hardware and do not auto-clear when a new cell is detected. The fix is a manual reset: isolate mains power to the fitting for 30 seconds, then restore it. This forces the charge controller to re-initialise and read the new cell from scratch. If the fault LED returns after reset, confirm cell voltage at the terminals is above 3.2V before re-seating.
The fitting passes the flash test fine but fails the full 3-hour duration test every time — the light fades and cuts out early.
This points to incomplete cell conditioning rather than a failed cell. NiCd cells lose memory capacity during storage and need one full discharge-recharge cycle to recover rated capacity. Run the fitting on mains charge for a full 24 hours, then perform a controlled test discharge using the test button. After that cycle, the cell should deliver the full 800mAh and hold lamp output for the rated duration.
The battery on my old Genlyte unit swelled inside the fitting and now the contacts are corroded — is this a known issue?
Swelling in NiCd emergency lighting cells is almost always caused by continuous trickle overcharge over several years, particularly in fittings mounted near heat sources like fluorescent ballasts. The charge controller in older Genlyte units does not always reduce float current as the cell ages, so the cell takes in more energy than it can release. Before fitting the replacement, clean the contact terminals with a cotton swab and isopropyl alcohol, and check the fitting's ambient temperature — if it regularly exceeds 35°C, consider relocating the fitting or adding ventilation clearance around the cell bay.
