Battery Care Tips
Battery Care Tips
🔹 Getting Started
Charge your new battery fully before you use it for the first time. Over the next few charge cycles, run your device down to around 20% before you recharge—this helps the battery perform its best. After that, charge whenever you need to.
🔹 Keep It Healthy
Avoid letting your battery completely drain or staying plugged in constantly. Both extremes wear it out faster. Store the battery in a cool, dry place when you're not using it, since heat damages batteries quickly.

Delivery and Shipping
🔹 Most orders ship the next day, and we use FedEx, UPS, Purolator and other carriers to get them to you. Lithium batteries have to ship by ground only, not air or USPS. Make sure your address is right before you order, because if we have to send it back, you pay for shipping again.

OSI OSA004 — 4.8V Ni-MH Replacement Battery for Emergency Lighting
This is a 4.8V 2000mAh Ni-MH replacement cell for OSI emergency lighting units using the OSA004 battery. It restores power-failure activation to emergency exit signs and backup lighting fittings. Fit and connector match the OSA004 specification directly.
- OSA004 platform compatibility: OSI emergency lighting fittings on this platform share a common 4.8V Ni-MH cell format with a matched connector and charge-controller acceptance window. Swapping to a different voltage or chemistry will cause the charge controller to reject the cell or overcharge it.
- Bench tested on actual hardware: We ran this cell through a full charge cycle and a simulated mains-failure activation. The BMS accepted the cell without fault flagging, and load voltage held stable across the discharge curve under the fitting's rated draw.
- First test cycle after installation: Within 24 hours of fitting this battery, hold the test button for the full rated duration. This lets the charge controller register the new cell capacity and confirms the cell accepts load before your next scheduled compliance inspection.
Charge indicator staying red after fitting the OSA004 replacement
Ni-MH cells lose voltage during storage. If the cell voltage sits outside the float acceptance window when first installed, the charge controller holds a fault state and the indicator stays red. This is not a wiring fault. Leave the fitting on mains power for a full 24-hour charge cycle — most OSI controllers will transition to green once the cell reaches approximately 5.4–5.6V at float. If the indicator stays red beyond 48 hours, check that the connector is fully seated and the cell voltage at the terminals is rising.
Emergency light dims and cuts out partway through a duration test
A new Ni-MH cell does not deliver full rated capacity on its first activation — it needs at least one complete charge-discharge cycle to condition the cell chemistry. If the light dims or cuts short during a test immediately after installation, the cell was not yet fully conditioned. Recharge for a full 24 hours before repeating the test. After one complete cycle, capacity should reach the rated 2000mAh and the fitting should hold illumination for the full test duration.

Frequently Asked Questions
My emergency light passed its last inspection but failed the duration test right after I replaced the OSA004 battery — did I get a faulty cell?
Almost certainly not. A fresh Ni-MH cell needs one full charge-discharge cycle before it delivers rated capacity — the cell chemistry is not conditioned out of the box. Recharge the fitting on mains power for a full 24 hours, then repeat the duration test. One complete cycle is usually enough to bring the cell to its rated 2000mAh.
The fitting shows a fault LED even though I've confirmed the OSA004 battery is seated correctly and the voltage at the terminals is normal — why won't it clear?
Some OSI fittings latch a fault condition in the controller and do not auto-reset when a new cell is installed. The fault LED can stay on even with a good cell and correct voltage. Check the fitting's instruction sheet for a manual reset procedure — this typically involves holding the test button for three to five seconds while on mains power. If no reset procedure is listed, cycling mains power off and back on will clear the latched fault on most models.
The original OSA004 battery in my fitting has swollen and deformed inside the housing — is this a battery defect or a fitting problem?
Swelling in a Ni-MH cell is almost always caused by years of continuous trickle charge at elevated temperature, not a manufacturing defect in the cell itself. Emergency lighting fittings run a constant trickle charge, and if the fitting is in a warm ceiling void or near a heat source, the charge controller can overcharge the cell over time. When fitting the replacement, check that the fitting's ventilation slots are clear and that ambient temperature at the installation point stays within the range specified on the fitting's label — typically below 35°C.
