Why the 3765 steps down output before the battery indicator triggers

Ni-MH cells have a gradual voltage curve — they deliver near-full voltage for most of their discharge, then drop sharply at the end. Mixing a new cell with three older cells forces the weaker cells to work harder during high-current draw, accelerating the imbalance cycle.
