Battery Care Tips

🔹 Getting Started

Charge your new battery fully before you use it for the first time. Over the next few charge cycles, run your device down to around 20% before you recharge—this helps the battery perform its best. After that, charge whenever you need to.

🔹 Keep It Healthy

Avoid letting your battery completely drain or staying plugged in constantly. Both extremes wear it out faster. Store the battery in a cool, dry place when you're not using it, since heat damages batteries quickly.

Delivery and Shipping

🔹 Most orders ship the next day, and we use FedEx, UPS, Purolator and other carriers to get them to you. Lithium batteries have to ship by ground only, not air or USPS. Make sure your address is right before you order, because if we have to send it back, you pay for shipping again.

Gardena Accu45 Cordless Hedge Trimmer — 4.8V NiMH Replacement Battery

This is a 4.8V 3600mAh NiMH replacement battery for the Gardena 8816 cordless hedge trimmer. It fits Gardena's Accu45 platform using the proprietary Gardena connector. Capacity is 3600mAh (17.28Wh) — matching the original specification.

  • Accu45 platform compatibility: The 8816 and other Accu45-series trimmers share a common 4.8V voltage rail and proprietary Gardena connector, so one battery pack covers the line.
  • Bench tested on actual hardware: We ran full charge/discharge cycles — the cells held voltage under load and the pack released cleanly at low-voltage cutoff without dropping the trimmer mid-cut.
  • NiMH storage before first use: NiMH packs ship partially charged — run two or three full charge/discharge cycles before regular use to condition the cells and reach full rated capacity.

Why cell count matters in a 4.8V NiMH pack

NiMH cells run at 1.2V nominal, so a 4.8V pack uses four cells in series. All four must hold consistent capacity — one weak cell drags the whole pack down and causes premature cutoff. These cells are matched before assembly to keep internal resistance balanced across the pack.

Trimmer cuts out suddenly — what's happening and how to fix it

A hedge trimmer that stops abruptly mid-use is usually hitting the low-voltage protection cutoff early. In degraded NiMH packs, one or more cells lose capacity and the pack voltage collapses under the motor load before the other cells are depleted. A fresh, matched pack resolves this — the cells reach cutoff together rather than one cell dragging the rest down early.

Frequently Asked Questions

My Gardena hedge trimmer cuts fine for a few seconds then the blades slow down and it feels like it's struggling — new battery, same problem

This is voltage sag under load, and it's common with NiMH packs that haven't been properly conditioned after a long shelf period. The cells need two or three full discharge-and-charge cycles before they deliver rated capacity and hold voltage under the blade load. Charge it fully, run it until the trimmer cuts out, then charge again — repeat that cycle twice more. After conditioning, check that the resting voltage after a full charge reads at or above 5.6V.

Charged the new Gardena battery overnight and it's still not holding a charge — dies almost immediately when I try to use it

NiMH batteries at 4.8V can arrive in a partially discharged state after storage, and some chargers won't initiate a proper charge cycle if the pack voltage has dropped too low — the charger reads it as a fault and stops early. Put the battery on the charger, wait for a full indicator, then let it rest for 30 minutes before use rather than using it straight off the charger. If the problem persists, measure the pack voltage with a multimeter immediately after the charger indicates full — it should read between 5.4V and 5.8V; anything below 5.0V means the charger didn't complete the cycle.

My Gardena 8816 trimmer worked fine last season, battery sat in the garage all winter, now the charger just clicks or flashes and won't charge it

NiMH cells that sit unused for months self-discharge deep enough that standard chargers reject them as defective — the pack voltage drops below the threshold the charger needs to start. This is called voltage depression, and the fix is a slow "recovery charge" using a charger that has a trickle or refresh mode, which feeds a small current to bring the cells back above the detection threshold. If your charger has no refresh mode, try warming the battery to room temperature first — cold cells read lower than they actually are, and a garage in winter makes this worse. Once the charger accepts the pack and completes a full cycle, run two conditioning cycles before expecting full performance.
