The AeroScout BMS interprets this dip as a low-battery condition and flags the alarm. The passivation layer breaks down within the first few transmission cycles, internal resistance drops back, and the alarm clears on its own — no reset needed.
Tag will not power on after cell was stored for an extended period
Li-SOCl2 cells self-discharge slowly in storage, but if the cell dropped below the BMS recovery threshold — typically around 3.2V for this class of tag — the BMS will block startup entirely. Check the open-circuit voltage of the replacement cell with a multimeter before installing. A reading above 3.5V confirms the cell is within the BMS acceptance window. If the cell reads below 3.4V, replace it with a fresh unit before fitting it to the tag.

My AeroScout tag is showing a low battery alarm right after I put in a brand new cell — is the battery faulty?
It's almost certainly passivation, not a faulty cell. Li-SOCl2 cells build up a thin resistive layer during storage that causes a brief voltage dip on first load, which the tag's BMS reads as low battery. The layer burns off within the first few RF transmission cycles and the alarm clears without any intervention. If the alarm persists beyond 10–15 tag transmissions, check the cell's open-circuit voltage — it should read 3.6V or very close to it.
The AeroScout tag passes its self-test on the bench but shuts off unexpectedly during normal use on the ward — what's happening?
A freshly installed Li-SOCl2 cell can show higher internal resistance in its first few cycles, causing voltage sag under the brief current spikes the tag produces during active RF location pings. If the sag is deep enough, the BMS interprets it as end-of-charge and cuts output. We saw this behaviour on the bench during high-frequency transmission bursts in the first cycle. Run the tag through one complete active-use cycle before deploying it clinically — internal resistance stabilises and the shutoffs stop.
The AeroScout tag won't complete its boot sequence after swapping the battery — it just restarts in a loop. What causes that?
This is a BMS fault flag set during an interrupted self-test, not a defective cell. If power was removed mid-boot on the previous battery swap, the tag locks in a fault state that survives the new cell install. Pull the cell, wait 30 seconds to allow the BMS capacitors to discharge fully, then reinsert the cell and let the tag complete its full boot sequence without interruption. The loop stops once the BMS clears the flag on a clean startup cycle.
