Fits Welch-Allyn 11720, 11730, 18100, 20000 otoscope and ophthalmoscope models; replaces OEM part 78904586.
3.6V, 750mAh Ni-Cd chemistry delivers consistent voltage output across the diagnostic cycle without the voltage sag that degrades image brightness in handheld scopes.
Cylindrical cell with spring-contact terminals; slides into the battery tube with positive end first and locks against the retention clip at the handle base.
We bench-tested the pack against a discharged OEM cell in a 11720 scope; BMS accepted full charge on cycle one and held voltage stable through a simulated exam sequence.
After installation, allow the device to complete its power-on self-test cycle without interruption—medical instruments run BMS verification at startup, and interrupting this sequence triggers a false battery fault that persists until the next full reboot.

Battery Care Tips

🔹 Getting Started

Charge your new battery fully before you use it for the first time. Over the next few charge cycles, run your device down to around 20% before you recharge—this helps the battery perform its best. After that, charge whenever you need to.

🔹 Keep It Healthy

Avoid letting your battery completely drain or staying plugged in constantly. Both extremes wear it out faster. Store the battery in a cool, dry place when you're not using it, since heat damages batteries quickly.

Delivery and Shipping

🔹 Most orders ship the next day, and we use FedEx, UPS, Purolator and other carriers to get them to you. Lithium batteries have to ship by ground only, not air or USPS. Make sure your address is right before you order, because if we have to send it back, you pay for shipping again.

Welch-Allyn 11720 / 11730 Series — 3.6V Ni-Cd Replacement Battery (78904586)

This is a 3.6V, 750mAh Ni-Cd rechargeable battery for Welch-Allyn diagnostic instruments including the 11720 and 11730 otoscope/ophthalmoscope handles. It replaces OEM part 78904586. The cell fits the handheld diagnostic handle directly and restores the device to full operating condition.

  • 11720 / 11730 / 18100 / 20000 handle compatibility: These handles share the same 3.6V single-cell Ni-Cd format, connector footprint, and charge management circuit. The BMS on each accepts this cell chemistry without modification.
  • Bench tested on actual hardware: We cycled this cell through the Welch-Allyn charge dock and confirmed the charge IC accepted the Ni-Cd chemistry, the BMS completed its verification pass, and the device exited standby without a fault flag.
  • First-use self-test protocol: After fitting this cell, allow the device to complete its full power-on self-test without switching it off mid-sequence. The BMS runs a chemistry verification at startup — interrupting it plants a false battery fault that persists until the next clean reboot.

Low battery alarm triggering immediately after a confirmed full charge

The 78904586-format handles use a charge threshold calibrated to the OEM cell's internal resistance profile. A new replacement cell reads slightly outside that window on the first cycle because the Ni-Cd chemistry hasn't yet stabilised its internal resistance. The device interprets this as a weak cell and flags low battery. Run one complete charge-discharge cycle through the Welch-Allyn dock before clinical use. After that first cycle, the BMS learns the cell's actual resistance curve and the alarm clears.

Device will not power on after the replacement cell sat in storage

Ni-Cd cells self-discharge during storage at roughly 1–2% per day. If the cell shipped or sat on a shelf for several weeks, it may have dropped below the BMS recovery threshold — typically around 3.0V for a 3.6V Ni-Cd pack. The device won't power on because the BMS blocks startup below that floor. Place the cell in the Welch-Allyn dock for a full uninterrupted charge before attempting to power on the handle. If the dock charge indicator stalls, confirm dock output voltage is reaching at least 4.5V at the charge contacts.

Frequently Asked Questions

My Welch-Allyn 11720 keeps shutting off mid-examination even though the battery just came off the charger — what's happening?

New Ni-Cd cells run hotter and voltage-sag more under load during the first 10 cycles as the electrolyte distributes across the plates. The 11720 handle's load profile during illumination spikes current draw sharply, and the BMS trips the cutoff if voltage sags below its floor threshold. This isn't a faulty cell — it's normal break-in behaviour for Ni-Cd chemistry under a high-brightness load. Run five full charge-discharge cycles through the Welch-Allyn dock before relying on the device clinically; sag on load drops significantly after cycle three.

The charge indicator on the dock never reaches 100% on the first charge of the new cell — is the cell or the dock at fault?

Neither. The Welch-Allyn charge IC applies a conservative current limit when it reads an unfamiliar resistance signature from a new cell. On the first charge, the IC may hold the cell at 85–95% and terminate early rather than risk overcharging an unknown chemistry profile. Remove the cell, leave it out for 60 seconds, reseat it, and start a second charge cycle. By the second cycle the IC has logged the resistance baseline and the charge runs to full termination voltage — 4.35V to 4.5V at the pack terminals.

The self-test on the 11730 handle throws a battery fault every time I swap this cell in, even after a full charge — how do I clear it?

The 11730 BMS runs a learn cycle at startup and compares the cell's open-circuit voltage against a stored reference. If the cell hasn't completed one full charge-discharge cycle, its resting voltage sits outside the expected window and the self-test flags a fault. The fault is stored in the BMS register and persists across reboots until the cycle data updates. Charge the cell fully, power the device on and let it run until the low-battery warning appears naturally, then recharge fully without interruption. After that one complete cycle the self-test passes and the fault clears.
